Figured I'd pass along the technique Crowder College teaches for the Driver's side 45* alley dock. It's a required skill for newbies looking to join Con-way Truckload.
Pull your rig along close and perpendicular to the intended parking spot treating this initial direction as 12 o'clock. When your steering wheel reaches the far side of the parking space turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. Hold the steering wheel until the tractor comes around to 3 o'clock. When the tractor reaches 3 o'clock, immediately turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. Hold the steering wheel until the tractor returns all the way to 12 o'clock. At this point, the trailer will be on appriximately a 45* angle. Turn your flashers on and GOAL at your position and visualize the trailer's track back into the parking spot.
Begin slowly backing straight back with the tractor watching your tandems and gently tweek the steering as needed. This set-up should require very little steering adjustments. When you get close to entering the parking space GOAL again making sure you're clear on the blindside and judge any adjustments. Now continue the back and GOAL one more time when you near the stopping lines that you're required to stop in. Step off from your back bumper the distance into the center of the box. Walk up to the steering wheel and step off the same distance back on the ground and mark the ground with anything as a stop guide and back it on in. Then kill your flashers. It's as easy as that. But they DO require you to follow this exact procedure.

That seems fairly straight forward. I was able to "see" it in my head as I read that description.
xlsdraw Thanks this. -
All truck schools use it.....not just Crowder.
JimDriv3r and The Challenger Thank this. -
Wrong! None of the three of us going thru "boot camp" at Crowder had been previously taught this technique. I'm sure many schools don't teach 45* backing. However, I DO believe they ALL should! -
Maybe I'm misunderstanding. If a school DOESN'T teach 45* backing, how can a student pass the DMV skills test ? DMV skills required: straight line backing/right turn/stop at line/parallel park/45* alley dock.
-
I was taught the 45' at Roadmaster Drivers School in Orlando FL.

This must be new at Crowder. I know I didn't get to learn it there last year. All we did was the 90, switch alley, and parallel.
-
I was taught that at my community college

Just want to say that the description you used sounds great if you are pulling a PUP trailer....NO OFFENSE....but if you have a 53Ft trailer and you don't have 2 miles of pull up space the back of that trailer is never going to be close to where you need it to be......
If you use that same technique but wait to turn your steering wheel hard to the right until your landing gear is in the center of your parking spot then after straightening out you put a small "kink" to the left in your tractor trailer you will be set up much better in a tighter spot......
Yes you can argue that there may be, or you should use all available space however there will be plenty of times you don't have much room. If you get used to doing this type of backing with limited space even when there is tons of room you will be much better prepared for those "tight" backings......Just my opinion
