Started with CRST in November of '04. You betcha' those first 6 months were rough...I'll just say if I NEVER eat top ramen again it'll be to soon. But I knew what I was getting into before I signed anything. knew I'd be broke for a while, so I planned ahead. iirc I made 24k the first year. Know I made 40k year two, 45k year three, and am on pace to do 50k this year. If I could do it all again, I do it the same save one thing-I'd have taken a loan and gone to a private school so I wouldn't have had such a rough first 6 months
The whole key to making it work is having a good codriver, and always being safe and early. They've taken pretty good care of me, and I've taken good care of them, their customers, and their equipment. We average 6,200-7,500 per week, and pull almost exclusively Conway freight drop and hook. I'll be leaving for CRETE in a couple months, but won't burn any bridges, maybe I'll come back when I'm old and tired and train for them. -
Take the standard perdiem rate (I think it was $53 last year) multiply it by the number of days out, then multiply the solution by 75% (it goes up to 80% this year). Use form 2106 or 2106EZ. 53*.75=$39 dollars for every WHOLE day you are away from your tax home.
You would use this instead of your standard deduction on your 1040. Also save receips for gloves, boots, warm weather gear, glass cleaner, paper towels, etc. etc. there is also a 2% limit of your adjusted gross income that you need to know about.
It's best to use a tax preparer that KNOWS THE INDUSTRY!! H&R Block are ####### when it comes to drivers.

I applied for a driving position at USxpress. When I received a confirmation for three day orientation in Lincoln Nebraska they called me to cancel my orientation. Two of my past employers, Midcities Motor Freight in St Joseph Missouri and Vitran Express, Terminal in Kansas City, Kansas claimed they terminated me when in actuality I quit them both. Midcities is a piece of work. Their driver turnover is extemely high. They're training new drivers 3 to 4 every week. Vitran is a sorry case to. Their driver turnover isn't as high as Midcities but never the less it's consistant. Midcities is in the Intermodal industry which is the most sorry, unsafe industry in trucking. Intermodal is time consuming which is why Midcities don't pay by the hour, they pay you by what you do, some call it piece work, I call it performance work. You don't move any containers or chassis' you make nothing. If they send you on a road run and have to wait to get loaded or unloaded you get no detention time, although they promise you get it, it's even written in their work rules, it's a big lie. Drivers in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City Missouri save yourself some anguish and stress, I would recommend you stay away from these two companies, also their dispatchers communication skills sucks, they talk to you as if you're some Indentured Slave. Makes you want to hurt someone in the dispatch office after talking to them on the company radio. They haven't learned, in most situations dispatchers can make or break a company when it comes to keeping good quality drivers. One jack off who dispatches recently got out of a missouri state penal institution,so you know he doesn't possess communication skills. Drivers Beware!!!

I am suppose to start with CRST next week and what I am reading is that maybe I should reconsider my career with this company! Is there anyone here that can say anything positive about them? I know that every company is going to have something said negative ... its just the way life is but is there anything positive to say?

Start readin' the threads about good companies and
bad companies.
That should answer a few of your questions.
Then again, it might cause you to want to ask more.
If so, ask away.
That's why we're here.
OH!
I recommend making yourself a snack.
The readin' could take awhile.

I work for them, and me and my co-driver get good miles, I am bringing home almost 600 a week with about 5 months in. I am not under the contract. If your late or the FM sucks then you get sucky miles.
AfterShock Thanks this. -
