Thought you were checking into Mercer? Honestly if I were you I would not go out and try to chase the buck. I would run between Chicago, Portage, In, Gary, In to Middletown, Oh, and Cincinatti and even Ghent, Ky. Run the short hauls and be better off. As long as your cost of operation and household bills are minimal then you should do okay. Jamie in Middletown should set you up pretty decent to get you into the swing of things. Be prepared to sit at times. Stand your ground and don't take the cheap crap that gets offered. I personally didn't last to long with them as the freight wasn't there and when I got my own loads set up they sent lease trucks and gave my freight away. Just wasn't for me. While in orientation at Rockport ask Matt what the turn over rate has been in the year and a half he has been there. Its scary.... Good luck and it might work out for you.

I was going to mercer and even had gone to louisville for orientation. I go there and they inspected my truck and came up with all this work that I needed to have done. Brakes adjusted, steer brakes cracked, ABS light didn't come on, and my favorite A license plate bracket and light on the rear of the tractor. Mind you I just had my pm done on the truck, I went through the roof. So my out of control temper led me right off their lot back home. I checked out the truck when I got back and none of the issues were serious. The crack in the brake was hairline and not vertical and brakes were adjusted correctly the abs was a computer issue. Too expensive to worry about for now.

A crack in the brakes is serious! No matter how big or small,my opinion. But I like my safety and value my job.
Anoter note, the Boonville,IN Alcoa does alot of coils I here from a dedicated guy. -
Be prepared for the same at Malone's garage in Rockport. The first time I took the truck down there the 25 year old kid in the shop said I needed $3300 worth of repairs and he could have them done by the time I got out of orientation. I laughed for awhile as I had just had an inspection done at T/A the week prior but new leases have to be inspected by the shop at Rockport. Shop needed some money and thought they could get it from me. I brought the truck home replaced 1 drive tire and went to another T/A got another passing inspection and went back to Rockport. Gave them both passing inspections and got my truck leased on. Alot depends on the mood of the shop KIDS. All but 1 or 2 are under 30 years old.

True any crack in the brakes is serious. The way I look at it, they did me a favor by finding it and now all the issues are fixed. I don't think I will have any problems signing on with them. I am a little peeved that I can't use all the equipment I bought with them That was a lot of wasted money.

they dont want a license plate bracket on the back, only a backup light which is a requirement even in a dot inspection. if there was a license plate bracket on the back and it had a light , it has to work.
and the abs light lighting up when the key is turned on is also a requirement. most times its a fuse.
one has to understand , the inspections at louisville focus on items the dot most often write people up for, if ya make thru that, you will be good to go with the dot.
i would assume your temper burned that bridge i guess. probably would have been best to fix the stuff and been hauling freight already.
and remember a t/a inspection is a different animal than a mercer inspection
and why would you not be able to use the equipment you bought, you are going to need it at crst are ya not? -
BESL, Kaplan, FTC, UA, Alcoa, Modular, Dworkin, ... Just to name a few I would consider before CRST ... I did it because I was new to flatbed and needed to be trained .... I lasted 3 weeks and actually wanted to quit before orientation was over but I had to wait on my authority to be activated ...
Beethoven and volvodriver01 Thank this. -
From November of 2011 to November of 2012. 700+ hired 117 still there. This is what Matt the safety director at Rockport states if you ask him. That should tell you something.. Just sayin'...

You'd better learn to control that out of control temper if you ever want to be the 'go-to guy'. Sometimes a load comes across a planner/dispatcher's desk thats paying stupid money. There will be something about it that will make the deskjockeys look for their best drivers (load is over 20 ft wide or tall, or extremely valuable). Who do they call? You can make more money on that one load than you can all the rest of the loads you see for the rest of the month. Thing is, they have to have full confidence in you. Full confidence as in once they assign the load to you, they know as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, you got that load handled.
But having an uncontrollable temper disqualifies you from the high end loads.. So does being tardy. Mercer is a decent company....you shouldnt have been so quick to walk away.SHC, The Challenger and MJ1657 Thank this.
