Will someone give me a basic course on CSA 2010 as it pertains to drivers? I've looked at the sight but it seems all the information I could find is directed at carriers.

    1. How does the scoring work?
    2. What changes my score?
    3. How do I find out what my score is?
    4. If my score changes in a negative way, does it reset or anything after a given period of time?
    5. What else do I need to know about CSA 2010 as it pertains to me?

    Thanks for any insight.

Here's what I've found so far since posting the original question:

1: Still no information known for sure, but it does say that drivers are not "rated," so I'm assuming there is no score. I guess it's pretty much like your DOT DAC.

    2. Changes can be made in 7 areas.
    A. Unsafe Driving (speeding, improper lane change, inattention, etc.)
    B. Fatigued driving
    C. Driver Fitness (CDL, med card)
    D. Drugs/Alcohol
    E. Vehicle Maintenance
    F. Cargo Related (proper securement, etc.)
    G. Crash Indicator (history or patterns of high crash involvement.)

    3. It says you can view your file anytime, but the only way I've found so far is by going to psp.fmcsa.dot.gov and paying $10 to download your file.

    4. All inspections and crashes of yours will remain on the carriers record for 2 years unless overturned. But I didn't see if it comes off your own record at any point.

    5. Some other things I've found out from the CSA site:

-- tickets or warnings you get in your personal vehicle do not count

-- if you go to a new carrier, your past violations do not affect the new carriers score. Only violations you receive at your current carrier will affect the current carrier.

-- Carriers considering hiring you can view your PROFILE with your written consent. However, only safety investigators (DOT) can see your "safety performance history" while they are conducting an inspection. This history is not available to carriers. They can see only the violations you have received while at your current carrier, but not your entire history (unless you've only been with one carrier, I guess.)

Google "SMS_AppendixA_ViolationsList" and download the XLS document. This will give you the points for the violations.

    Dave_AL Thanks this.

Woah. Operating a CMV while texting is an automatic 10 points. I think some jobs will be opening up before long.

So what do the points mean? I know the values and the weights, but after you accumulate all these points what does it mean?

You know, I'm really not sure. I suppose your company would cut you loose, but the CSA does say that it's not DOT's job to suspend or pull your license due to your CSA.

I imagine most companies will have a points threshold, past which you are no longer employable.

If you looked at the points, did you notice all the items for which you can get points due to cargo? Everything from temp to paperwork - shipper didn't put something on the paperwork? You could get points.

For a points example, Speeding 2 which is 6 - 10 MPH over posted limit is 4 points. They will take it times 3 and you will have 12 points. After 1 year passes it will be reduced to 8 points, after 2 years it will be 4 and after 3 years it will be zero.

I don't know what points the carier gets or how it comes off. I'm guessing they get the 4 points and keep it all for 2 years, but I don't know.

carriers are weighted also, it just drops off faster. Point stick around even if a driver is cut lose. I'm just curious to see what the end game is. I'm all for collecting data, but only if there is a reason for it.

I don't understand. Why would they take it 3 times for one occurrence?
