    Hey all,

I received 3 months OTR experience 3 years ago, but left the industry. I want to come back, and I live in Central FL. I have received the following "offers" of interest.

    Swift, Flatbed
    CTL, Tankers
    SS, Van

I've been leaning towards CTL, with Swift in second place. Your comments are appreciated, thanks!

If you are a "go getter" and want to make really good money I would highly suggest Armellini. They run floral and do team runs. Home time is excellent because all their loads originate out of Florida and you are typically out 5-7 days max. Once you empty out and make all your deliveries you grab a back haul and return to FL. Reason you get paid so well is because they pay by the mile and per stop. Most runs are multiple stop consisting of around at least 10-20 stops. You deliver mostly to floral shops and have the key to the cooler so you just drop the product in the cooler and head to the next stop. No waiting around the docks to get unloaded!

I ran for a company exactly like them and did very well as a new driver when I first started out. I currently also run for a company just like them except we deliver seafood. Unfortunately the company I drive for does not take anyone with less than 3 years experience or I would recommend them.

Another company worth looking into if you don't want to run team is "Windy Hill". They also are a very good company to drive for! They run lots of miles though and you have to be willing to work hard!

Conway Freight is hiring in Orlando, you will have to go talk to the Terminal Manager, you might have a chance. I know it's hard to get a job in Central Florida (I used to live in Longwood) but they hire students and guys with low experience every now and then.

Windy Hill is a just a stones throw from me. I"m thinking that I really want to drive tanks, and most newbs don't get that opportunity until they have some experience.

Go with CTL; excellent opportunity for you. Tanker experience will open many doors for you in the future and much better pay than van, reefer, flat.

There's actually a lot of tanker jobs in your area too! I think there is 3-4 juice plants right by you. Also Florida Rock and tank lines have some places over there. I am not sure how easy it is to get a tanker job with no experience though. Only way to find out is to start making some calls. Windy Hill is a good company though if you want to start there. You will definitely make good money. They run very hard!

Ctl is pretty good, I worked for them about three years now, think local work pays crap down there but...us otr guys just got a raise 42cpm loaded and 34 empty and that is across the board pay even for people with no experience, I'm out of st. Gabriel louisiana terminal, my one complaint was they use to be on the low end of pay scale but as of mid october that all changed, hope this helps you

no pets at ctl, or riders. and the 42/34 is for system drivers. have to agree to 2 weeks out minimum. most the time you wont tho. im a driver out of mobile al and we run dedicated peroxide and you start at 28cpm but with a little exp you move up quick. i have just under 3 years at get paid 36 loaded and empty. one more month ill be at 37. cap is 39 loaded or empty for 4 years. 12 bucks an hour loading/unloading after the first hour. break down time is the same, and 100 buck layover pay. not a bad setup. local guys down south florida get shafted but get on the road and youll do fine

I've been with CTL for a little over a year.It will depend on the terminal you work out of .Starting pay is .28 as base, the .42 and .34 varies from terminal and loads from each terminal.Still not a bad company. All their trucks are automatics, and when you go out over the road you may end up in other terminals that will have lds.to keep you moving. As Ststed above they do pay $100per day for layover and $12 per hr. after the first hour of being in a plant to load and unload, and for tankwashes. You will have to go out with a trainer and while training they will put you up in a motel at night and the trainer sleeps in the truck. You will do all the driving and the trainer will be in the jump seat so you can get through the training pretty quick. You will need haz-mat,and tanker endorsement on license and have to get a TWIC card. Good luck with wherever you go.
