I prefer Cummins,But then I don't know why any one would buy a pete for what you have to pay and then a Flat Top.I wouldn't drive anything I couldn't stand up in to put my pants on in the morning, unless you sleep in your clothes. where do they place your TV,Microwave,Closet Etc. I always buy the best truck for the money, and the cheapest to run I don't really care what the name on the truck is, But I don't consider myself a trucker per se, more like a business man or entrepreneur. I guess that's the difference...............

Asking for opinions isn't always a good thing. Neighbors are buying new MX, local companies known to me that were buying Cats in new before are also going with MX.
On the other hand, there are those who like Cummins and are buying new Freightliners and Western Stars equipped with them. Only thing close to the Cat 13 liter is the Maxxforce 13 sold by International.
OTR it would depend on which you like, if horsepower, torque and weight are considerations, you buy what fits your specifications.El jaguar Thanks this. -

I've only had my 2012 MX for a couple weeks but so far my opinion is great fuel mileage, weak on power. 455 hp, 10speed OD, 3.36 rears. Wish I'd have held out for a 13 speed in the same truck or gotten a little lower rear ratio. I did get 7.95 mpg from Phoenix to Dallas with 15,000 in the box running 65-70 so that made up a lot on the lack of hill pulling power in my mind.

There must be a reason why Peterbilt has most of their Paccar engines sitting in crates in Denton and Cummins (not ings) has a backlog causing production delays at Peterbilt and Kenworth.
If you enjoy being the canary in the coal mine, buy an MX.... Broken crank shafts, injectors popping out of the head, accessory drives coming off..... Plan on making truck payments on a truck that you cant drive.
Or buy a tried and true Cummins that is dependable. Let someone else (Werner, Knight, etc...) be their guinny pig.El jaguar Thanks this. -
Thanks for your time mkmac, I'm choosing a flat top because I don't go out state ,I live in California and I pull a flatbed so I don't need the stand up sleeper..
-
I pull a flatbed here in Central Valley California, 50% of the time I run empty just do local runs
-
Thanks for your comment guntoter I never had a Cummings or paccar all my trucks have Detroit engines on it , to bad they don't offer Detroit on new kW or Pete's..I guess you have a good point about been the guinea pig ...

You wouldn't be king off the hill with the MX,it is a simple workhorse.(if you are the type off person who wants to be the fastest one off the line at the red lights................don't buy a MX)
The biggest advantage that it has,is the fact that it is designed together with the truck whereas the Cummins isn't.
Then there is the weight advantage.
And how does it compare in price?(i really don't know, was hoping you could tell us)
Guntoter's remark is purely based on Cummins previous engines.
Their experience with the newer engines is no better/longer then any other engine builder.
There have been people who complained about Cummins and there have been who complained about the MX.(and there were those who would never buy another Detroit again)
As with anything mechanical, some dumb luck is involved.
ps can i make a suggestion?Think about getting a 6x2 instead off a 6x4.
They are now offering this in new trucks.
Several hunderd lbs lighter and better on fuel.
And in the Central Valley you aren't in much snow.
