Just bought another truck today with a 400 Cummins so I don't know much about the truck. Under heavy throttle leaving from a stop light the truck cuts out 4-5 times while under heavy acceleration until it's back at highway speeds. Trucks runs smooth at idle (though the idle is on the high side too) and driving speed, it's only when under throttle that it happens and then it clears right back up again. Any ideas as to what I should be looking for? Going to be changing the fuel filters tomorrow and will be looking over the truck more than I got a chance to today.

Injector cam lobe failure. Pull the valve covers and check injector lever travel, pull pan and inspect camshaft injector lobes.

The miss is not steady, kind of intermittent. Wouldn't an injector cam lobe be a little more of a steady thing throughout all RPM ranges?

Nope, they act just like you describe at higher rpm under heavy load with a rapid misfire.

Any idea what I'd be looking at pricewise getting this fixed?

It's been a long time since I've done one and I don't know the parts prices. Labor could vary widely depending on if it needs cam bearings which they commonly do and you won't know until you take it apart.

You might be way ahead swapping your engine into the replacement truck but I would first confirm the camshaft is bad.

Old truck has got a 3406, Cummins is a new ballgame for me. I'll be messing around with the truck tomorrow so I'll check things out.

I'm just thinking rather than sinking 5 grand plus into a 400 Cummins, that 3406 would set right in it's place without too much trouble.

New cam and bearings run about $500. No way in hell it's going to take anywhere near $4500 in labor to replace them. I'll be gutting this one out with Cummins one way or the other.

    what? are you new?

lets start with the simple explanations first. go ahead and change the fuel filters and see how the that goes. while you're in there priming the system, check for leaks. aside from that, you can't really tell anything without insite - cummins electronic diagnosing program. i would more or less leaning towards the fuel gear pump, but it is possible to have an injector going out of it, although an injector failure for an isx is very rare.
