Does anyone happen to know the cam follower gasket(s) thickness for CPL 160? “Thickness”, is probably the incorrect term but which gasket part number or combination of gaskets, to be used? I’ve got two jig timers to use, as soon as I get my heads back from the machinist. Can the gasket sets vary from one follower to the next, or can two different CPL 160’s have different gasket combinations? Are things such as cam wear, push rod wear, valve wear conducive to gasket variations? Is there a standard?

No on the standard. Find a service manual, do the steps to gauge the thickness you need, and order the proper shims. Most will tell you to replace with the same thickness. Do not do that.

“Do not do that”, because of wear on internals? Just curious because when Cummins built these engines new, did they use the jig timing gauges on every engine?

I’ve been building this engine exactly how several of you guys suggested and it’s got me realizing just how cobbled up alot of old Cummins engines are and were, due to folks wanting more power. “Just turn the fuel pressure and change the button”. So, many even old timers, who drove trucks back in the 60’s and 70’s have told me this. Very few folks know how to do it the proper way.

I've never watched them build one, but i would say absolutely. There is no "standard thickness". Never have i had to get the same thickness as the ones I took off. Yes, that difference would be due to wear.

As hard as they are to do, I see no good not doing it right in the first place.

I think most used the same thickness either cause they were too lazy, or not smart enough, to do it right. It is a very important step IMO

Definitely been alot more extensive than an inframe but I’ve learned alot. I’m at the point where the liners, pistons, bearings, cam is timed and are all in. Pump and injectors are built, water to air is ready, new piston coolers and new oil cooler. What can and should I do about the oil pump?

I always put a new pump on when I overhaul. Other than that, shim it if you need a bit more pressure. The Cummins normally had pretty low oil pressure. Think specs on the low end were 9psi. I always tried to get hot engine idle pressure to atbleast 18psi

“Cobbled up.” No way. I just recently got into the pump of the NH195 I have in my old wrecker to see why it has tremendous “crack in the stack and pulls like a 400.

Never seen a button milled like this before either. It’s a #40. I can only guess how they shimmed the followers to set timing.

The small cam and big cam 1 run hi psi oil. 20-40 hot idle and 70-80 hot at 2100rpm. Cold fire up psi as hi as 100 was not uncommon. Put in the bc 2 pump. It lowered the psi to 20 idle and 65 at cruise.

I’m sure this has an original small cam oil pump, but you’re suggesting a bc 2 pump to replace it?

    Oxbow Thanks this.
