Here it goes guys I've been troubleshooting a code 431 on a cummins idle validation switch here's what I've done I've replaced potentiometer and harness one new and one good used setup I've swapped ecm with a know good one I've pulled the oem harness and inspected and replaced all the wires from ecm to gannon plug on the firewall problem still persisted intermittent check engine lite and idle only tap the throttle and it goes away then comes back when you gently push the throttle so I ended up finding the wires in the cab and bypassing them still did the same so I put in a another new potentiometer calibrated it and now its all good so here's the question one been working on this project off and on for a few weeks when I get a chance I think there's a short in cab harness do you think it could have shorted out the other potentiometers or am I crazy this is one of those projects that maked you bang your head on the wall so what so you guys think any experiences you've had with some elecrical problems will help thanks guys

I would like to know that too., I ohmed out both IVS and TPS and they are working as advertised. Mine is very intermitten, but once in awhile I get a dead pedal after coasting throttle closed for a few minutes but slap the throttle a couple of times and it works again. I am thinking one or the other is sticking or not making contact. $200.00 for a set of new ones. Thats an expensive guess.

TO: truckmechanic
sorry new to forum, wouldn't let me pm you.
I read some of your posts and you seemed like you may be very knowledgeable in this area. I recently had problems with my throttle pedal on a 99 pete with a cummins isx. I got the potentiameter that the vin says I need, got home and it's a 6 prong, mine is a 3 prong and has an extra sensor under the pedal. Decided to try updating the harness to the 6 prong, but nowhere in town had one, so with the old potentiameter (that I rubbed numbers off trying to read them) found one that appeared the same as old one. Installed, took for 30 min test drive, and seemed problem solved. started up a couple days later to run a load, and same thing... Did some research on the potentiameter that I had put on and it's for Detroit. Now I have the Potentiameter with the 6 prong and have ordered the harness or cable assembly for that one. Do you know if the pedal I have will work with this other style potentiameter? Or should I be trying another potentiameter. The only 3 prong one for cummins that I can find says for cummins celect. any help would be greatly appreciated. I am getting frusterated, seems everything on my truck is "special" and not the norm...

You have the. Crossover year I belive 99 is the year they started running the isx and getting rid of the n14 the one you have on your truck should work the second switch on your pedal is for the jakes if I remember right the six pin sensor takes a diffrent pedal I've been down that road.also Detroit and cummins use the same switch cat I think OS diffrent if I remember right.here's the deal with cummins you will get the issue you are having if you don't set the sensor first it should have came.with instructions in the box there is some specs on the side of the sensor and on cummins you have to set the sensor with an ohm meter at idle to the specs on the sensor I would try that first also remove the harness and inspect it real close for.damaged pins and damaged wires especially where it comes near the steering shaft.the truck above turned out to have a pin in the gannon plug on the firewall almost broken in two so if you moved the harness or the truck would get a jolt it would set the code and lose all throttle if you need any more help let me.know and I will pm you.
