Good afternoon I’m trying to get any feedback as to what I can do or how to proceed with the predicament I find myself in. I bought a 2015 volvo with a Cummins cash with about 410K miles. I noticed that the truck was missing oil after we got it down to our yard. I didn’t think much of it, did an oil change and sent it out. The truck went out for about 12k but my drivers had to constantly be checking the oil and adding because it was consuming it at an abnormal rate. I made the dealer aware of the issue. The next day the driver calls me telling me that the truck started running rough and he shut it off on I-40 entering California. We had towed to a shop where the diagnostic came back as follows: THE FUEL PUMP TAPPETS FAILED AND DURING THE FAILURE IT PUT METAL INTO THE OIL CIRCUIT. THIS IN TURN DISTRIBUTED METAL TO THE CRANK BEARINGS CAUSING THEM TO SPIN AND CAUSE SCORING TO OCCUR ON THE CRANKSHAFT AND DAMAGING THE ENGINE BLOCK.
So basically they are telling me I have to put a new engine in the truck. Am I basically screw** or what are my options? Is it worth getting an attorney involved? Was the oil consumption an indicator of the issue?
Cummins complete failure just after truck purchase.

Yes.
You need a new engine at this point.
Once metal got into the crank shaft mains or bearing surfaces in there, that's the end of it. Throws the whole thing out of balance and she will proceed to tear itself apart.
Most trucks drip now and then. No biggie. But when she is thirsty drinking oil it's a real problem.
I once pulled PA 56 into Fishertown up Babcock Ridge on a bad oil fill cap that came off. Lost three gallons right out of there at a minimum. I spent a cold night up there until morning when a female Star pulled off and laid down three gallons of oil and took off. I never got a chance to thank her.
I started carrying 5 gallons in the one side box pernamently from that day forward. The appointment time got destroyed on a simple oil cap but thankfully that nice M11 held up nicely. It was not happy but she did good that day.
It's disturbing when a big truck complains of Mr Pyro, followed by Turbo complaining then the engine temps rise and falls off (Liquid level dropping) and then the coolant gets involved shortly before the idiot red oil level light and alarm kicked in halfway up the #### thing. Row of dominos toppling faster than I can get ahead of the story that the dials were trying to tell me.Oldironfan Thanks this. -
Pretty common failure on the ISX from my understanding. Oil consumption was probably a seperate, unrelated issue. According to many on here, once that pump goes the block is basically a boat anchor unfortunately.

if its spun main bearings and it was shut off quickly there's a change the block and crank are salvageable and you can go to an O/S tunnel and grind the crank undersize and fit the appropriate bearing. that's provided the crank passes crack testing.
if it was ran for too long while spinning bearings its pretty well a bin job as the heat will damage the block and crank.
repairing your current engine will involve removal and complete strip down. the assess, machine, repair and rebuild. the cost of that would likely equal what a dealer supplied exchange unit is worth. the dealer exchange unit will also likely come with a superior warranty service also.
I would strongly advise getting photo evidence or better yet getting a second opinion from 3rd party as to the extent of the damage. some people over exaggerate the extent of damage.fargonaz, Oldironfan and Midwest Trucker Thank this. -
Ahhh man. :[
Yes this happened on one of mine. It’ll be between 28 and 35,000.
Man that sucks so bad. I’ve been spreading everywhere this post. Wish you could have saw it in time.
Is there a list of things to go bad and the avg cost to repair
I’m so sorry to hear that. I’d get double shi**y with ththe dealer and try my everything to make them fix it.Oldironfan and x1Heavy Thank this. -
I'm pretty sure there was a recall on those fuel pump tappets. I don't know if that gives you any options now though.

Oldironfan, jsnell and bzinger Thank this.

Not a recall, it was a TSA, basically if you find out about it, Cummins will buy the parts. The oil consumption was most likely carbon packing, common issue that was resolved with a redesign. Sorry for the rotten experience you're having.

Plenty of used ISX engines in Phoenix. Try these guys, they have a good rep.

Can't believe that engine got past the recall , my 2013 was recalled and updated and I thought the carbon packing thing was an issue with 2012 and 2013 engines .
Already have my 2013 scheduled for an overhaul this Xmas and will have about 700k on it .
Somebody didn't take very good care of that engine is my guess .Oxbow and Oldironfan Thank this.
