Hi guys I just had a oil sample report come back with a warning with high iron levels of 117ppm. It is a 2007 ISX and out of warranty.
the previous sample was 6 mos back and iron was 38. everything else is normal. Had lots of black smoke during this last month due to egr, but I would of thought that would of caused high soot levels.
We run them about 250-275hrs and change oil and filters. Using Delo 400 and fleetguard filters. Any ideas Thanks

I'd test it again at the halfway point in your oil change interval...preferably at a different place, or grab two samples sending one to two different places. I usually get my oil changed at the Sapp Bros truck stop local to me where they do oil sampling and they've come up with different results on the same sample. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...how much faith should be put into that...??

Even Cummins says to never perform any tear down based on oil sample reports. They are only a guide. In your case I would run another full interval and retest. I would want to see at least two sample reports back to back with consistent readings. Reports with high ppm of wear metals may be just an indicator that the oil lubricity is breaking down due to intervals that may be too long. Intervals aren't always based on time or mileage, but also load and operating conditions. Truck engines really don't record mileages or hours as being hard hours, or soft hours, they are just hours. If you had one service interval with more hard hours than normal your oil sample report will show that. Nothing is wrong, the engine was just worked harder and the oil should have been changed a little sooner. This time of year is murder on engines because of cold starts aswell.

Thanks for info HeavyD. Thats what Cummins said as well. Test again at half way point of interval and compare results. The motor was worked hard during those hours up North in minus 20 deg weather and lots of idle!
