As per the above, rawze.com and his YouTube series would be the best place to start, I've watched nearly the full series and I'd quite comfortably tackle the rebuild, (I'm a qualified mechanic by trade but not diesel) biggest expense if you can't find someone to lend you the tools is the cost of them, especially the counterbore tool, it's $2k odd by itself, I added it all up on the apex industry website and got to just under 5k in special tools for the rebuild, probably not worth while in a one off build, but if you planned to do it more than a couple of times worth the investment.

The rawze guys seem quite happy with the IPD parts if you wanted a slightly cheaper alternative. They also say to go new head, don't muck around with a reman or trying to reman your current head.

Good luck, you could probably build a really nice motor if you set aside 10 days solid to do it, and had the right tools for $15k, you supply the labour.

Yes I have watched his series. I know I could do it myself. I will be down for a couple of weeks either way I'm sure? One issue is there are very few people I trust to work on my truck. Seems every time I take something to the shop I regret it.
There is a company that make a new aftermarket head, but not a cummins head? I would probly pay to have the counter bore done. There is a guy local that dose it relitivly inexpensive.
How long should a inframe last? Another 500k miles?
What is the resale value of the truck if you do the rebuild yourself? (Not that it really matters).

I thought that if I just replace the cam and follower and maybe the cam bearings and continue to run it. I could make it till November or December and do a complete inframe myself. That's the slow time for me. I have to buy a cam either way at the end of the day. I think I could do the cam job in 3 days taking my time. Dose that sound reasonable?

This is the only new head I can find. Cummins told me there are no factory heads available. The few cummins replacement parts I have bought were not USA made. The stuff I took off were stamped USA but replacements parts stamped Malaysia.

Resale of inframe done yourself (no real warranty) is nothing....

Cm870 which I'm thinking is what he has with that truck. Labor should be around 5k. Least that's what some of the shops charge... This guy I told him about he knows his stuff.

Just fix the Isx. Don't think you'd like the c12.

I've seen a company called "jereh" advertising aftermarket isx heads have no idea re the quality, but might be worth investigating.

There is no reason an inframe should not go another 500k or more especially if done correctly, from my reasearch liner heights are a cause of issues in the ISX series and lifting them when doing an inframe can help with overall longevity, that and obvious egr issues, but that can be sorted at rebuild time aswell...

I agree with the others people aren't going to be super excited about a home done rebuild with no warranty, but if you plan on keeping the truck, does it really matter?
