Considering a '06 Volvo with Cummins ISX 400hp for $7k. Ad says engine needs overhauled. Truck has "shared imaging" on the doors, I assume hospital imaging truck, and I assume it was left idling a lot, but don't know for sure.
So the questions are; assuming the main components are ok,
What does an inframe rebuild cost?
Would it be better/cheaper to replace with a low mileage used motor?
Can that motor be turned up to 450+ hp?
Cummins ISX, reman or replace? Turn it up?

25K to 30k, depending if crank is bad. After in frame can be turned up depending on model, and not isx markings.
If you can do it yourself, and rest of the truck worth 7K, oh you probably have a truck worth 10K with 30K in it. -

Count on everything including the head, cams and followers being junk. Basic Inframe with Cummins parts done at a NON dealer at $20,000. Minimum. Now add cams and your going to have $30k in it.
Cummins crate motor shipped to your door is $25,000 but you still have to install it.
. So you’ll have $40,000 in it. It will be worth $15,000 tops once completed.
Nothing wrong with that if you know it going in but you better not be financing if the money. I have personal experience with just such topics.Last edited: Aug 9, 2018

Ok, thanks. That was the direction I was leaning, I just wanted to verify the cost.
The other issue is that something else major could be wrong and without a running motor you wouldn't find out until too late.
I'll pass.
Thanks everyone.
