pre 2010 engines had problems with pickup tube O-rings. it was easy and not expensive fix and covered by warranty. I have epa10 version of that truck (3.42 rears and opened hp from 455 to 475 hp 1750lb ft). I did not do anything with emission because I am from GOLDEN STATE. my usual runs are from los angeles to mi,ky,in,tn and back with 25-30k lb in the box. the mpg varies from 7.5-8 . I have goodyear fuelmax on truck and trailer, skirt under trailer and meritor inflation system on trailer. I like this engine . this is the best engine i have ever had. its money saver engine. the other nice thing is that parts are cheap. oem oil pump $300, water pump $100, turbo $900, HPP $1000,...

What kind of truck and engine is this you had? an you explain it in detail? I have a 2007 Freightliner Columbia Detroit series 60 14L and rebuilt it at 808K miles. Right now and has 1,007,000 miles and just put a new head in at 1,003,900 miles and I'm not looking to put any more major work into it. I'm looking to get a newer truck but I'm clueless on what to get. I do like Freightliner so maybe the Freightliner with a dd15 but I have no idea how to spec it.

Is your truck paid for and still making you money?

There is way more tunes than I can count for these two engines. But only a select few can tune them correctly so they do not blow apart. And any high hp tune will shorten the life of the engine by 25% to 50% faster. Even if tuned correctly.
And DD15 is better in many ways. But I am a 60 series guy.

We are currently running both in dump truck/pony combo's at 140,000 pounds in hilly terrain. Our ISX is 600/1850 and the DD15 is 505/1650. Obviously the ISX runs away on the hills but the Detroit will actually be able to start accelerating quicker as it crests the hills.
From a dead stop, I run away from the ISX. The DD grabs gears effortlessly. Both trucks are on 22.5 rubber, 18 double overs and 4.30 rear gears.
Both get about same fuel mileage.
ISX calls for fewer parked regens, but seems to use more DEF fluid.

The DD has only had the idler pulley assembly fail twice and the dozer injector replaced.
ISX has had two fuel injection pumps, 6 injectors, air compressor, thermostat and housing, numerous NOX sensors and EGR cooler and valve.

Both have same mileage and both have just had to have the DPF catalysts replaced (around 300,000 KM.)
But in summer they do a lot of straight truck work at 80,000 pounds and do lots of stop and go and idling with spreaders. That's why we went lower rating on the DD, thinking it would work harder and hotter and be better on DPF......but it still regens like crazy.

Should add....I did have lots of check engine lights and derates in the beginning with the DD15, but I finally have it solved. It was air system freezing that works the DEF system purge. So it wasn't purging completely at shut down during the winter.
Not one issue so far this winter and it has been minus 40.

Apparently the DD's after 2013 no longer use air to purge the urea system.
