Hey Guys, I'm torn on which to choose. I'm looking at a 2001 International 9900ix with 700,000 miles and a n-14 celect plus. Then the other is a 2005 Kenworth W900L with 1,000,000 miles and a C-15 Acert. I'v never owned either of the engines, and was needing some info and which would be the better pick. I know there are cat guys and Cummins guys,I'm not trying to start a war,it's just i'v heard good and bad things about both, and being there is 300,000 difference between them made a big difference. As far as i know nothing as been done to either one of them, and i don't know any of the serial numbers on the engines. Any info would be helpful. My last truck had a 3406e cat 5EK,and i liked it, but i didn't know how much different the Acert was from it. Thanks

I would go with the n-14. It has more life left in it compared to the accert that's at 1m. The n-14 is also cheaper to o/h, less parts, cheaper parts, and might be better on fuel. I like cats, but the cummins would keep more money in your pocket in this instance.

Lolz... Mr. Dont take anyone's meaningless word for it. Do yourself a favor and talk to your fav mechanic.
Best engine since day 1 always been a CAT. Others bixch about it like they do about getting a "hood" or all alum wheels.. or a 10 over a 13 spd

Get the kenworth with the cat. Better truck and four years newer. Acerts I think would be better than a old cummins n14 with fretting block.

That's the thing with that many miles on both of them it is hard to say. It kinda one of them depends on how well previous owner took care of them deals. I'm a CAT fan myself, Acerts catch some grief but they are good engines. Updates have been made in the top that pretty much took care of there weak points. I'm sure with a million miles its had them done. N14 isn't a bad engine at all either as far as fuel mileage I'm not sure which is actually better. For me it would come down to price of truck and which I actually liked better. As far as cost of overhaul cost of parts shouldn't carry a lot of weight, if done right it won't need it for a long time if done wrong it could haunt you forever so I say its a good thing they haven't had a recent major. It is always a good idea to get one checked out by some one you trust or a neutral party.

I had a BXS C15 and I got rid of it. Unless you own a truckstop and are independantly wealthy to buy the fuel for it, I would go with the N14. I have an N14 now and I get 5.8 MPG pulling tridem loads all day. Oil samples are definately your friend in this case. I wouldnt be scared of the mileage on either of these engines, but from my experience that kitty was a very thirsty engine. My 3406E on the other hand was very fuel efficient.

I have a 2000 International with N14 @ 1.2 million and showing no signs of trouble any time soon and 7+ mpg. W9's are very nice trucks, ACERT can be expensive to own but definitely will give you all you want for power and torque.

check the fuel mileage on the N14 ECM, that should give you a good indication of the driver's habits and the type of life it's had. 7.3 or better it's probably been babied. less than 6.3, walk away, it's been road hard.

We have an 03 T600 with an N14 with 900k on it. No signs if trouble and it regularly gets over 7 mpg. My truck is an 07 379 with a c15 avert with 700k. Injector roller went bad and scored the cam a little. Hoping it will last until I take some time off this winter. I get low 6's for mileage.
