Hello all,
I have a 98 Volvo with an N14 Celect Plus. It will stumble terribly when I am not accelerating real hard. If I put the throttle to the floor it will come out of it. In my thinking that would seem to eliminate the pump. I just replaced the fuel filter yesterday (had less that 4,000 miles on the old one). The old filter was a Napa filter and replaced it with a luber finer filter. The truck also cranks over for probably 10 to 20 seconds before it starts. I have read about cleaning the check valve just infront of the ECM. I plan on doing that shortly, but I was curious if anyone has any other ideas. The caution light on the dash is on, but was on when I bought the truck. This is a new to me truck and slowly trying to fix the issues.

Many possibilities.
The Yellow Check Engine Light. What codes are you getting. Do you know how to get the codes from your truck.
My truck 98 freightliner with N14. It will sometimes have hesitation. My connection to the boost pressure sensor in subject to moisture. This is on the end of intake manifold facing the firewall . I have replaced the sensor and same problem. I take the connection apart, clean it, put back together. This will work for a week or couple months.
Also could be an actual loss of boost air from turbo.
Read your engine codes that will give you a good idea where to start looking.
Good luck. -
I just took the check valve on the return line (the one just infront of the ECM) out. There is hardly any spring pressure on it. I cannot take it apart to examine it further. I can see the spring is light but this almost seems like it does nothing. The spring doesnt look broken, but it looks like it moves a little before compressing. Just curious if this is normal
bad-luck Thanks this. -
Can you post a pic of the valve and where exactly is located, probably should check mine too
-
Im sorry, I just reinstalled it. It is located just forward of the ECM (front of the engine). Mine was a straight check valve, but the videos I have seen the have a 90 on them. I needed a 14mm swivel socket, a 1" wrench, and a 1 1/16th deep well socket. Only take a few minutes. I also removed and blew out the small filter on the top of the pump (resembles a woman's breast). Just needed a 14mm wrench to remove the cover off of it. If you do this be careful there is a spring under the cover.

The filter on the pump. I was told you should never have to change it. OF course I did as soon as the mechanic said I shouldn't have too.

Is there a way to get the codes without having to take it to the Cummins shop? Monitor in the dash is not working. So naturally I have no idea what it says.

The
The valve is located on plate that is mounted behind your ECM. IF you follow the input fuel line from your fuel Filter back to the ECM. That junction there where the line connects to the Aluminum plate is where the check valve is. There really isn't that much to the check valve. Just a ball with a spring behind it. It is suppose to prevent your system from draining out every time you shut down.
One nice thing about the N14, it is self priming.DUNE-T Thanks this. -
The check valve is at the top left corner at the back of ECM.
If you look above and behind the black hose with the yellow stripe. That black hose is the fuel feed to the filter. It curls above the braided line that is the compressed air line. Just above the rubber hose on the braided line you can see the cable tie in the back. That is where the fuel line and the inline check valve is located. The check valve just looks like a part of the connection on the cooling plate.
Good luck.Last edited: Dec 17, 2016

On the freight
On the freightliner there is. Not sure about your truck.
Under the starter key. I have 2 toggle switches. One is to raise idle. The other is to read the codes. Without starting truck turn the key on. Now on your dash the red engine light will come on and flash once and stay on, and the yellow light will flash three separate numbers. Say `121
It will flash once, pause, flash twice, pause, flash once, pause. Then repeat. Then you look up the code here

Then get your manual here:

Then register here, these guys are helpful once in a while:

The best help I get is on TTR. Most guys here have not only read about it, but have actually done it.
Good luck.CellNet Thanks this.
