We have direct customers on the outbound side and a few on the inbound. Whatever they can't load we first go to a few brokers that we always use. Some of the places we haul for only use one broker so we have no choice. After that and as a last resort we will go to the load board.
We do have a couple of o/ops that like to find their own loads back home and when it's slow like this I will also look for loads. We have drivers that have established their own relationships with shippers also and can almost always get a load.
I would think it would be hard to work a schedule like we do working only on the load boards. A lot of our Return loads will only take us a quarter or half way back home. Pay on short loads back will be good rate per mile but you still end up with a couple hundred miles dead head. But when you add those in with the outbound rate you still do good on the trip. -

When the market is good I'll stay out a month, take a week off and go back out. If the market is fair I'll typically be home once a week and the weekends. If the market is bad I'll stay home for a week or two and do 3-4 trips.
flood Thanks this. -
I'm a newbie o/o and haven't found the perfect blend yet. But I don't like to be out more than 3 days at a time...I pick my own so I can take vacation during the summer whenever I want, but on average I try to be home every other day.
