That's not how it works in my experience. However, if one has an accident from not using chains explaining why you were not using tire chains or alternative traction devices when chains were advised will be difficult and expensive.

ID only has a “chain law” on Lookout, 4th of July, and Lolo. Basically all they did was say you need a drag chain when chains are required. But none of us ever wasted time with a drag chain.

Going south, MT had a sign when chains were required. Coming north, ID had a sign that said chains advised when road is snow covered or icy. They didn’t have a sign requiring them, it was up to you to decide. Most of the time I’d run past the chain area and hit the wide spot right before the 20mph corner at the bottom unless it was really bad. There was a time or two that I stopped on the road and chained up at North Fork because it was snowing so hard.Accidental Trucker and D.Tibbitt Thank this.
