I'm still here! I live on the east coast central region.
The more you post about your situation, the less I understand your reasoning.
If you think you are going to add to your retirement fund by driving a truck, good luck! Unless you own everything you have, (no house payments, car payment, etc.) you will need what you make as a new truck driver just to live.
If you lost 100K in the "big" crash, go back to the job you had for a few more years. Must have paid good to have that much to lose to begin with.
What I gather from your posts is this: You are independently wealthy and are just looking for a hobby to pass the time.
If I had your money, I would burn mine, and live happily ever after.

I made good money for a lot of years. I'm NOT well off, but I have no bills at all and hopefully will NEVER have to buy a new car again. The money I lost was a less than I previously mentioned; it was probably closer to $60K-70K. Sorry 'bout that!!!
I *net* about $3K per month from my SS and pensions. Plenty!! But I have things I want/need (mostly WANT) that $3K per month won't cover. Like finishing my basment ($15K), a bunch of new electronic "toys" (I LOVE all things electronic), stuff like that. I will NOT take any money from my savings for such things. I (or the surviving spouse) may NEED that money badly someday. And remember, at $3K per month, I can not/will not make time payments on ANYTHING.
For over 35 years I was a computer professional, working for the likes of Unisys, IBM and others of that ilk. By the early 2000's the computer industry was dead and I was only 57. I was "downsized" out off two different computer jobs. Not quite prepared to retire, I started driving.
In general, driving a truck is the nastiest job I can imagine. Yet, when I was "out" there were a few days when it was HUGE fun to be on the road enjoying the traveling. I miss those few days, but I'm also somewhat greedy and want to still make it while I can.
Just a difference in people I guess. Some folks just want to quit working ASAP (my sister, for example has wanted to retire since she was 30!!!), others almost CAN'T quit. Why would John McCain want the most stressful job in the world at the age of 72? Why did Bob Hope and George Burns continue in entertainment well into their 90's?? Certainly, NONE of them need the $$$.
I LOVE my time off, but I like working as well. Maybe 6 months a year would be about "right" for me.
Anyhow, that's what I mean by not HAVING to work. I can "put off" home improvments, electronic toys, etc for a year or more, until things get better. I've been there myself, and feel for those that HAVE to work (or the kids might go hungry) but can't find anything right now. But I'm eating really well, have a nice home (high in the mountains of So. CO) two nice cars, the BEST health care available and all the neccessities covered without touching my 401K's, IRA's and other retirement savings.
Hope this helps understand my "wild ramblings" a bit.....
Boo
P.S. True FACT...... Shaffer (division of Crete) has an active full time driver who is 82 years old. I've met the guy myself in the Kansas City terminal!!!. -
OK Boo, good luck to you. If it works for you, go for it!

What then? If you're not able to drive and make money. what do you then? Sit and sleep in the truck?
