I'm currently in my last week at CDS tractor trailer school. For the last week or so I've put in tons of research and finally decided to go with Prime Inc. Is that the right decision?
My pre-hires are from the following companies: Prime(tanker NE), Schneider(GA Pacific dedicated account Big Island, VA), US Xpress(solo NE region), Stevens, Swift(Dollar general dedicated account), and TMC.
I realized TMC wasn't for me because I don't want any parts of flat bed. I read that US Xpress was more catered towards team driving and have autos so I crossed that off my list. Stevens was a no go because of their pay. The Swift dedicated account sounded promising until I watched a couple of youtube videos about what it consisted of. My final choices came down to Schneider and Prime. I leaned towards Prime because I figured I'd make more money. What I mean by making more is that I was told by my recruiter I'm guaranteed at least a $1,000 a week once I upgrade to my own truck. $1,000 a week sounds very good for a person with literally no bills outside of a cell phone and cs.
After thinking long and hard plus plenty of research I realized that the tanker division would be the best bet. With time I should have enough money saved up and should have better job opportunities/income. From my understanding, I'll start with a starter/training company then after a year move on to a better company with my gained exp. I just want to make sure I'm going about my situation according.
As far as my background, I'm 26 years old, excellent employment history, can pass both hair and urine drug tests, one speeding ticket within the last 3 years but overall a pretty clean mvr, no criminal record, willing to sacrifice my home time(tough when I have two lil girls), and no wife/serious relationship. I took and passed my hazmat & tank endorsements a week ago. I'm willing to get my twic, passport, and double/triples if needed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

From those you listed, Prime tanker looks best.
You can make more money though with hazmat/tanker.
Here's some hazmat/tanker that hire new CDL grads:
Tidewater Transit
SVTN
Superior Carriers
CTL Transportation
Trimac Transportation
Schneider Bulk
Either way, Prime or these others, good to start your new career with tankers. Yes, go ahead and get TWIC & passport.mwhjr1988 Thanks this. -
Thank you! I'm going to start researching those companies asap. Anyone in particular you think I should give a shot at first? I assume based off those listed of companies that Prime would be considered my last resort?

With the hazmat, after all training is complete and you're running solo, figure on making $60K+ per year. They're all good companies. With Trimac, they have an "Elite Fleet" that you can qualify for after 2 years, then pay jumps to $80K-$85K and higher. Trimac and Superior may both have 1 yr. experience required on the websites, but in reality they do hire new CDL grads from certain schools and at certain terminals. Best bet is do the online applications to all of them, then pick from the job offers.hal380 Thanks this. -
On the trimac app, what should I select for the location I'm applying for? I don't see Virginia anywhere on their list. I guess I'll just select a location closest to me. It looks like Schneider doesn't have an opening for VA tanker division. Looks like I'm going to have fiddle around on these apps for those companys and hope for the best. Once again, thank you for your help. I would've simply messaged you but couldn't because of my post count.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
For whatever reason, several of the companies with tanks don't hire out of certain zip codes and areas in Virginia.
I know Schneider doesn't, so it doesn't surprise me that others don't.
If SNI did, I would probably be working for them right now.
But no.
Edit: The SNI telephone recruiter for my area was the singularly most unhelpful, unenthusiastic, unmotivated and useless trucking company representative I've spoken to out of them all (ZIP code 22903). -
For some particular reason people whom have never driven a tanker like to recommend this a place for new driver to learn.
Take this as a voice of reason from a tanker yanker, spend the first year learning to drive a truck before adding liquid surge to your list.
I agree with going to PRIME for learning and they are from the bottom of the list in mill training. Nice well maintained equipment, decent training program and you'll make a good living while learning compared to most others. -
There's been a couple of posts from new drivers being hired for Schneider Bulk in Virginia.
Make a phone call. I remember one new CDL grad said he was told Schneider Bulk wouldn't hire him because he lives in Nashville, TN but after a phone call they hired him.
