I have been looking at the Cobra stealth 29 rfx from Custom Cb. Anyone have one of these? How is the recieve quiet, or noisy? This would go in a semi. I see they offer 2 models $269 and $299. Any response would be appreciated.

Just my opinion .....
ANYTIME someone will CUSTOMIZE a CB radio you need to not walk away but RUN from that place. Sorry but the laws are very clear what you are buying is a simply a ILLEGAL radio. If you want the best bang for your buck get a good CB set and a amp of your choice... That way if you want more power you just sell the amp or if you want a better CB you can sell it ...
Now that said there are mods for receivers that DO work like sub for the 2sc1674 using a 2sc2999 transistor and some diode changes YES they are illegal however the FCC is far more worried about TRANSMITER changes and I don't know of any FCC enforcement that was because of a HOT receiver .... :smt077
Again just MY opinion ..... -
I have the non RFX version or earlier version built by Doug when he was helping Sparky out. It is a great little radio. keys up right at 4 watts and does a peak of about 40ish (when you talk into the mic) all reports are crisp clean audio and can blow others out of their cabs if the mic gain is set too high. Absolutly no bleeding onto other channels.
The recieve is much better then a stock cobra 29. There is alot of noise int he air as of late due to skip conditions but that is hard to get away from, all you can do to get rid of the extra static is to trun either the RF gain down or dial back the squelch.
The RFX version will do 100+ watts of peak power (when you talk into the mic) while holding the deadkey down to around 4 watts. Just gives you a little more punch through the extra noise and will make you heard better locally.
Don't expect to get the same distance out of it as you would a regular CB with a small linear behind it. A regular CB with a linear will get you out further due to hgiher carrier power. I could be wrong but I believe the higher carrier ie higher output when you key the mic, is what gets you distance.
I know for a fact that this is not your typical clip and snip moded radio. I have opened mine up and nothing is clipped inside of it. Everything is still in place and not bypassed etc. Soemthings are replaced but that is about it. Lets just say that they flat out work and work fantastically.
I paired mine with an older Palomar 450 and it seems to work great but I understand that it works better when paired with one of the newer high drive amps. I might be pushing mine a little too much. Remember, I don't have the RFX version of the stealth. -
I agree with everything Rat said! I bought the Cobra stealth 29 rfx from Doug last year and LOVE IT, So much in fact it ranks right up there with my S9.The switchable high/low is really nice. While the black chrome is a competition radio with many upgrades it is very loud and most importantly CLEAN. On low power I see 2 to 122 watts, On high I see a 12 watt DK. The other you mentioned is the LTD stealth 2 which is strictly a competition radio and should not be used for anything but that as it is dirty. Matter of fact when I was making my purchase I was told if I planned on using the LTD for anything but competition he would not sell it to me as it is not meant for talking. I recommend the Black chrome stealth 100%

Morning Rat .....
Did you measure this by ear or have some way of a controled measuring of this ?????
I would like to see just what he did I know FOR A FACT if he changed the 2sc1674 to a 2sc2999 the receiver was at least 6 db better ......
BruceIDIeselman Thanks this. -
Thanks for all the help guys. Does anyone know how many amps the 29 rfx stealth draws. Im not sure if the company will let me power direct to the battery. I would like to do this and I see that GI Joes offers a battery hook up kit using 8 ga wire and has fuses at both ends for a reasonable cost. If I can do this I would like to as I have also heard that a battery direct hook up can help with noise generated by the vehicle. Thanks again for the help.

The black chrome chassis looks pretty cool, they will scratch if you stare at them
more then 15 seconds.
The blue light is ungodly bright even when put on dim, except when Doug builds it
he puts the power HI/LO on the dimmer switch, then there is no way to dim the lights.
I sold the RFX'd Stealth 29 I bought from Doug and the guy loves it mounted in his boat.
The RFX modded radios are proven performers as above average watt Big Truckin Style Radio's
Check with Al at Sparkys for a better deal on RFX modded radios,no advertising
just a fact,Doug is way high on the majority of what he sells.
My RFX 25 Cobra talk just as good and were considerably cheaper -
You can buy two 14' spools of 12ga(red/blk) two inline fuse links w/30amp fuses,3/8 ring connectors and 50 zip-ties at Walmart for less then $20.00USD.
Yes 12ga is plenty for running juice to an RFX Modded radio.

On mine the high/low power is the CB low power/PA high power, The dim/bright function works as it should. They are quite bright however even on low.
Cobra 29 LTD Special Edition CHROME w/ RFX-75 $199.95 Sparkys.
Custom Cobra 29 Black Chrome with RFX 75 Custom CB $199.00
Sparky does not list the 29 Stealth the OP is refering to or the LTD Stealth 2 Competition version. Although he may be able to build one.Last edited: Jun 21, 2011

On his end I came in louder and clearer on my stealth then I did the stock cobra but the connex was another story since it does a bit more (keys up between 40 and 50 watts with about 200 pep) then the cobras. But then my connex cost a good bit more. The only time the stealth outdid the connex was when I put the Palomar 450 behind it.
I don't care to have alot of clutter in the truck so I am running the connex rather then the stealth with the Palomar.
