There's no law that says rubrails are required. It's a convenience factor more then anything else.

Most of your dedicated pipe hauling trailers will have something along those lines for pipe stakes to be used. In one form or another.

    ShooterK2 Thanks this.

Then use that to hook a strap? A picture would help me. The concept has me thinking.

What I'm worried about, Snowwy, is once we remove the pipe stakes and go to using the trailer, and let's say we are hauling a front-end loader, chained to the rub-rails..... is the DOT gonna say something about those missing sections of rail? I understand that some trailers come without rub-rails, but on one that DID come with them, are they gonna have a fit about the gaps that have obviously been cut out? Does it weaken the rail as a whole in it's ability to handle the force of the chains?

It shouldn't weaken anything. The remaining pockets and spools are all still welded individually to the trailer. All that was removed was one pipe spool and 8" of that flimsy outside rail.

This is why I always share tips and tricks I've picked up or thought of. Someone else out there might benefit. I would have NEVER thought of something like this. Thank you!

I'm the go-to stepdeck guy in my company for loading (I'm the only one who likes it I guess, we have like four step trailers) and I've always struggled with trailers like this one where there are no securement points over the rear axles for smaller stuff.

Yep, this is why this forum is such a great source of information. Thanks MJ1657 for posting that picture. Now I will cut down some chains to do the same.

    MJ1657 Thanks this.

Are you questioning whether that short chain is legal? There is nothing in the regs that I have ever seen that says you cannot combine different types (chain/strap) of securement. As long as the chain and its hook(s) have the proper rating there is no harm in it.

    Lepton1, MJ1657 and Chewy352 Thank this.
