    Not allowed into the yard more than 1hr. before schedule, that'd be ok.
    Office workers not available until 5pm. Warehouse Lumpers do not open doors until 7pm, regardless appointments made between 5pm-7pm.

    Extremely tight spots as trailer tires rub on guardrails and a lock comes in between
    the rear wheels, plus the standard bar. You ain't getting out till released.

    Takes Lumpers 4-6hrs. to unload a full trailer and they get $200 per truck.

    I've never had the unpriviledge of going to a cvs dc, I have been to quacker oats in phx and they were fairly quick in getting me loaded when i was there.

    try the CVS in N. Augusta, SC.... 8 hrs min in door... appt is made one hour b4 lumbers show up... they take union breaks and lunches... then about 30 min b4 their shift is up you are given the green light... try to use the bathroom...you need an escort... like you are going to rip them off...

    We went over this in school today. Do you have to hire lumpers or can you unload it yourself and make some extra cash?

    Depends on the warehouse- some won't allow you to unload unless you have the 'proper' gear (as decided by the receiver). That can even mean you cannot borrow a pallet jack, but those kinds of rules are usually in grocery places.
    At places without such rules, you can lump the load, but most companies don't pay the driver even half of what they will pay a lumper.At a place like that, some drivers will make up a fake receipt with a lumper's name and coolect the full lumper fee. The other thing to remember is that you are supposed to log yourself as 'On duty, not driving' for all the time you are lumping your load- which can screw up your day.

    Wouldn't you be On Duty, Not Driving anyway while waiting? How would it screw up your day? How would you collect a lumpers fee? Does a company give you X-amount of cash? or would that be "added" to your paycheck? Sorry for so many questions, just trying to learn as much as possible before I get a job.

    You could probably get away with logging sleeper berth while being unloaded .Faking a lumper's receipt could be difficult . To be able to deduct the expense companies should have the lumper's name , address , and social security number . Most union warehouses won't let you unload yourself if you don't have a union card .

    Well that third trip to CVS DC in Los Angeles ended my job with JBH and I believe today it was to my benefit.

    I got there an hour early, they let me in and told me to check with office, an hour later the office opens, they tell me to go back to the gates and assigned me a number. I dock in but the gates are closed no doors open until two hours later.
    I said OK let me get a pallet jack, I can unload it myself, little did I know.
    Each pallet was 800lbs. avg. and even with suspension down I could not get the first pallet past the lip of the gate. I worked out in the gym for 3 years prior to trucking, so I can say I am average and in shape. This frustrated me and I was told I cannot use a power jack even because "that belongs to the lumpers".
    Another two hours of back and forth me getting more frustrated and more angry than I already was, manager not responding and by this time sending everyone his "goodnight, be safe, I am out" messages. I was considering leaving the trailer, but wouldn't let me out the gate. After several discussions with the CVS manager, I agreed on a Reschedule. If they don't want their merchandise and JBH refuses to pay me detention, the hell with it all. I'm in it for the money not for the love of being on the road or driving a big rig. This was only a 350mi. run with no backup preplan for next day. It takes only 30min. to load 26 pallets, pillows and all if you know what you're doing, the rest is BS.

    BTW - DOT does not "need" to see any Lumper receipts, so save time when logging, "log legal" is a Very Key Word, if you know how to use it, you'll never be in violation.

    Nope, you can log unloading as sleeper time, as long as you have a sleeper. You will have to log at least 15mins of line 4 time, to show that you backed in, did paperwork, talked w/ lumper etc. It messes up your day, because even though you can't stop your 14 hr clock anymore, the less 'extra' time you have to log, the more 'adjustable' your logging can be (Logs wouldn't like me right now...). Lumpers fees (at covenant) were handled by submitting a macro (on your qualcomm) and your dispatcher would give you a code that you entered on your final paperwork, so payroll would pay you (on your check).
