Hello there guys, I was wondering if I need my CDL to do hotshot for a company. (Victory Transport) I've been working in the warehouse for the past 5 years. Supervisor at the moment but decided to get into trucking for more money. I want to get a Dodge Ram 3500HD. (Should I get it with flatbed or regular bed?) I 'm only going to be hauling 1 or 2 skids no more than 3k lbs with no trailer. Will i need a cdl for this? I live in Texas and will sometimes require to go out of town to different states. They are offering me 65% per load. Think it would be worth it? All advices would be greatly appreciated. Be safe out there and God Bless.
D I need a cdl to do hotshot?

If the vehicle is rated more than 26,000 lbs GVWR then you need a CDL or any weight if you decide to be hazmat qualified. Many hotshots run hazmat. Another consideration is if you pull a trailer with greater than a 10,000 lb GVWR which brings your GCWR above 26,000 lbs then you need a CDL. I'm not sure but I don't think a 3500HD is capable of doing that. At a minimum any vehicle over 10,000 lbs you need a DOT medical card.

This link gives some information on the cdl with hazmat.
http://expeditenow.com/truckingblogs/395-can-you-haul-hazmat-without-an-endorsement.html
383.5 Hazardous materials means any material that has been designated as hazardous under 49 U.S.C. 5103 and is required to be placarded under subpart F of 49 CFR part 172 or any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR part 73.
So, you need a CDL with a HAZMAT endorsement to haul hazardous material, but only that material which is on the Table of Hazardous Material and which requires placarding. If it doesnt require placarding, you dont need a CDL, and you dont need the endorsement. Its really that simple.

So would I be good to go with my regular class c license to do hotshot in a 3500HD truck? I know those truck weigh about 11k lbs. So if I take a load that weighs 3k lbs, that would be 14k-15k lbs when loaded with truck weight.
