Can someone please tell me what is behind the turbo on my D12? It almost looks like another turbo. It's cylindrical with a corrugated exterior and is clamped right behind the turbo on the exhaust. At first I thought it was part of the turbo. But now I'm not sure. It's a 2007 VED-12d, non egr set-up.

As stated above it is an EPG. Its an air actuated plunger that restricts exhaust flow when turned on. To act as a brake or it also turns on when the engine is cold to help it heat up faster.

Ok I had no idea what this was. So with this setup there are no internal enging brake components like a Jacobs? Also are these expensive to replace? Mine may have a crack in the housing.

There is another internal valve for the second position of the engine brake but its not as many thing as jacobs just one extra valve. As far as replacing them theyre not really cheap if i was you i would just find a housing from a junk yard and try to rebuilt youre cylinder for the brake volvo sells the rubuilt kit

On my volvo D12 I have 2 steps for "engine" brake.. EPG is one of them, another one, like stated above, is internal valve on the engine.
EPG's tend to get stuck, limiting exhaust flow and "braking" the engine..
I think it costs anywhere from 600 up to a $1k

After closer inspection I think it's just the casting in the housing that makes it look like a crack. There is no signs of exhaust leaking. As for an engine brake mine works like crap. The techs at Volvo said it was weak when it was in for service and said I was due for a top end service. I had them due it and the engine brake is just as weak now as it was before. I wonder if my epg is stuck open? Is there an easy way to check it?

Not really but if youre epg has failed one of two way wither stuck closed which is going to make the engine choke almost all the time and youre going to have horrible mpg or its stuck open and doesnt engage this way when u have the first position on youre engine brake youre not going to feel anything going on there should be a significant difference between 1st position and second it is very possible u have a bad VCB valve and youre sencond position is not engaging giving u the idea off weak engine brake. Ots not like d12 has the best engine brake but i dont think its weak either it does the job. Check carfully if both of youre positions work and u can go from there.

I think if you want to check EPG you have to take it out and do it visually.. it might open but not all the way
