if you get a pre-hire letter from one company but decide to go with another will it count against you? My prob is the company wants you to go to their orientation to do their testing before you are officially hired. I cannot afford to quit my current job and risk not getting hired by this other company, and i don't have enough vacation hours at my current job to take days off, and i would need to give at least a month notice for any vacation request anyways... idk why you wouldn't get tested before quitting your current job, what is the purpose of that?:biggrin_25513:

Well there are not many companies that will hire you sight unseen and when I say that I mean with your background check ran and the employment varifications ran and all of the other things as well as your ability to drive a truck, Or are you going to go to work for a company and then get the training? You didn't tell us much but this industry is like that and they will send you home packing it on a bus if you get to Orientation and they find an issue with your license or a criminal charge that you forgot to report or whatever, This industry has become very transparent what I mean by that they don't want people who hide things here this is since 9/11 they can not afford a driver slipping through the cracks and doing something really devastating like what happened to the twin towers! Except those where on Airplanes! Good Luck with this!

I think they set it up that way so they can do the ol bait and switch. Tell you the pay is this, and mileage is that make it sound good then once you are jobless tell you we are sorry you don't qualify for the original offer but we have this much worse deal to show you. Most have to take the worse deal because they already quit there other job. I have never worked for a carrier so I cant be sure just passing info from other threads I have read here on the forum. I have only driven for family very small operation, and am an O/O now even smaller operation. Just be careful really research on this forum best of luck

A pre-hire will not count against you if you go with another company. Even if you attended orientation first then decided it was not for you, while it would weigh some, but as long as you had an explanation then you would be okay. It is not like you didn't take it because all of the sudden the wanted to give you a whiz quiz. You are good. When they say they wanted you to do your testing, it was just a driving text, physical, and that sort of thing anyways. Again, do not worry. It was a pre-hire, not an offer of employment. Most companies, you are not hired until the orientation anyway, so its all good.

Edit: You probably did the right thing anyway!

Don't you have a family emergency to attend to? It happens to everyone at least once during their lifetime. I saw a driver get unloaded a day early and jump to the head of the line because his brother was in a car wreck and he needed to get home because all the family was being called home for the brothers imminent death. Saw him a few hours later playing video games in a truckstop. Don't you have a family emergency in another state?

That there is always another option. I know a driver whose mother died 3 times and had to be rushed home all three of them!

Yes, once you're hired, call your old company and tell them you have decided to remain in XYZ city for family personal reasons and won't be back. If your old company says someone called to verify employment, say, "Oh, I forgot about that; it was something I was checking into awhile back, kind of an impluse idea I had." Remember, when a company fires or lays you off, they don't give you a 2 week notice. Take care of yourself and don't worry about little white lies; it's a cruel world and a terrible economy for most. In a couple of weeks, you won't even be a memory in the old companies mind.

Not even sure it would take a couple of weeks with the mentality of the companies out here today.

All of the big carriers are that way. You must be ready to get on the truck after orientation IF YOU PASS all their tests. That means you have to cold-quit your current employer. If you fail the tests I guess you just go back to your old job with no problem unless they called them to verify employment, that might cause you to explain to them.

I started a thread on this topic last night because I think it's a practice that should be banned in an industry that requires employment verifications due to job changes in the past 10 years.
