Any of these. 4K is what you’re after. The higher the quality, the easier it will be to identify tags, stickers, and people.

I’m curious also. I’ve went through 2 garmin dash cams. Both broke within a couple months.

There are several non “dash cams” that would work too... and offer more flexibility in how you use them... not just on the “dash”.
GoPro
DJI
Both would do more but cost a bit more too.
All depends on your use case. YouTubing?

Get one from Amazon, not the truck stop. They are cheaper and lots of reviews about cons for each product. You will probably need to buy a memory card. Get two memory cards. Apparently the heat cooks the memory cards over time.
After years of using web cams, I learned that dash cams do not like running 24/7 for days. At least every day disconnect the dash cam because they will stop recording even though they look like they’re still working. I had this same problem with two different kinds of dash cams. A daily reboot fixed the problem.
Also, place the dash cam behind the “wiper area.” Otherwise, rain and snow will block the dash cam. It would be nice to get a dash cam with the ability to accept memory cards of over 32GB. They were not available when I purchased mine.
Only get an actual dash cam. Other types of cameras were not designed for this purpose. A dash cam automatically deletes older videos to allow space for new videos; can automatically save videos after detecting a “hard movement/accident”; can record speed; etc.Last edited: Dec 19, 2018

I've been reading up on them and thinking 4k would be a plus as far as reading plates. Looking at the Blackvue dr900s and probably going to order one this week. Street guardian has great reviews also but dont think they have a 4k model yet.

Agree they might be good for getting plates but unless you need to read plates often, the file size of 4K would be huge compared to 1080p files... but go with what you need.Derailed Thanks this.

Wow, that dash cam is very expensive. I would wait until the 4k dash cams lower in price. I’d give it 2 years. The 1080p dash cams do a good job at reading plates. The little screen on the 1080p dash cams cannot depict a 1080p image, but the video is actually 1080p once transfered to a device like a laptop or smartphone.

Good points, I thought the 4k ones had been out a little longer. Kind of sways me back to the street guardian SG9665GC I was looking at. Seems to have a lot of good reviews. 90 percent of the time I'm out is at night.

If the OP can afford it. I would highly recommend the GoPro. For one reason only.
It has image stabilization technology built in. A must have for clean video, regardless of whether it’s HD or 4K.
I don’t see this in the specs of many dash cams.MidWest_MacDaddy and PE_T Thank this.
