Company refuses to fix several problems, one being dash light for air pressure gauge (can't see air pressure and drive nighttime only).
Would this in itself be a valid reason to refuse to drive this truck?

    Other items not working:
    Engine light constantly on.
    Water temp gauge not working.
Fifth wheel slider (air slider) not working.
...and a few others I can't recall offhand.

I believe the dash gauge light IS valid reason for refusal to drive, as FMCSA states that a requirement is:
"(1) A pressure gauge, visible to a person seated in the normal driving position, which indicates the air pressure (in kilopascals (kPa) or pounds per square inch (psi)) available for braking;"

Key word is "visible". You agree?
    Now how about the others?

The answer to that would depend on a lot of other factors that we don't know. Do you like the company otherwise? Have you been fair with giving the owner a chance to fix these items? Have you been stuck with a lemon and/or does the company now see you as a "problem to always be dealt with"? How long have you been trying to get this issues fixed and what has been their response? Do you have other employment prospects? It's all about the context of the situation and how you've treated it up until now and how you feel about the job otherwise.

Regarding the gauge light .. are we talking about the bulb that illuminates the gauge or the warning light?

The dash light is being made into a mountain IMO. Its a simple fix and should be a $.50 bulb. The other things aside from the slider yes they are valid reasons to have a complaint. Water temp needs to work and that light shouldn't be on. As for the slider how often do you have to slide your 5th wheel? If you slide it often yes I'd be raising hell if you don't eh you can probably get by. Sometimes we have to work on our own equipment. I spent 4 hours last night dicking with trailer wiring to get my sign and inside lights working so I could load. I have 3 bald trailer tires, and some other issues but its just something I'm dealing with right now.

Ask yourself this. Is it worth putting up with it? Does the company treat you well other wise? Is it worth losing your job over? Is it worth still hounding the owner about?

I fixed the trailer lights because I really enjoy what I do. I like my boss. He has some things that need to be fixed on his trailer, but he's been very helpful so far. I enjoy working with him and am not going to jeaprodise my position. Now if it wasn't that way I wouldn't feel that way and wouldn't have fixed the lights I wouldn't be pulling that trailer either. But its worth it to just bite my tongue and do what I need to do at times. So take all that into account. Your light needs to be fixed for sure as do the other issues. If they refuse to fix it and having treated you right for a long time it may be time to find another company. If they treat you right just stay on them about it and fix the air pressure light yourself. They'll eventually get sick of hearing about what needs to be fixed and fix it.

I would say what I suspect everyone is thinking but "not gonna do ut". The first truck I ever drove was a 66 R model Mack with no dash lights AT ALL. You could cure that by driving with the interior light on at all times.:) If that was not bad enough it had no A/C and a trans with two (2) gear shifts causing you to have drive at times with one or less hands on the wheel! When I inquired about this I was ridiculed and accused of being a female sex organ. I have since realized that this was intended to be an insult. I think you are worrying a little too much about minutia when there is freight to be hauled. Keep on Trucking, Over and Out.

I must warn you however that I am old school and don't fit in anymore. Nowadays we are more concerned with our paperwork being right and everything being kosher with everybody than we are whether anyone actually makes any money or not. I feel attacks from the new breed coming shortly. Don't get excited I'm just messin' with you.

Talking about the bulb that illuminates the air gauge light.

I agree STexan, on the "history" part & related matters.
In summary, defects on this truck & others that I have had to drive have often gone un-fixed for months, even to the point of going unfixed until they decided to sell the truck.
Some issues serious (defective red/yellow popout valves that wouldn't popout at all, even down to virtually 0 pressure) with a defective tractor protection valve. Almost had a serious accident due to this after I lost a brake hose and it dumped all the air instantly, with no reserve for tractor. That (previous tractor went unfixed until months later, when it was sold by company.
Truck at hand, with the problems listed has been written up for months. They just stuck me in it starting yesterday because another driver w/ more seniority "wanted it".
Things are not good with company, as in the past they have refused to pay me for extra time required to fix many other Non-repaired issues that I HAD to refuse to drive (brake chamber gushing air leak) and another time (defective pigtail, no trailer lights). These issues were AFTER I had notified them of the defects the previous day, but still went unrepaired.
Yep, I'm looking for other work, btw. Nothing solid yet, tho.

379exhd, sure if I was O/O I would fix it all myself, but company doesn't want us messing with items such as this, plus they won'y pay us for any costs or time incurred. That's my point. Not a mountain out of a molehill when you repeatedly spend hours upon hours unpaid for items they are supposed to fix, especially after ample warning and write-ups.

The company does not treat drivers well, in many regards. Tired of them shorting me pay for my time, plus them sticking me in "surprise tractor change" situations, where each change results in "a whole nother new set of issues".

My PT report sometimes looks like a Sears/Roebucks catalog when I first get a tractor switch. Usually I drove ONE particular KW, which was 100% DOT "great". This was after many months of fixing issues that needed to be fixed.
I'm definitely not one to just jump up and "refuse to drive". But things with the company have gotten to this point, with their utter disrespect for driver's (valid) equipment complaints and unpaid time for issues that are caused by the company's lack of repair when previously notified (daily inspection report write-ups). They wait until the problem totally disables the truck, then the extra down time comes out of MY pocket.
