I was scheduled for Jan. third orientation @ Conover. Kristy called me this morning and gave me the 'not enough trucks routine'. So I'm out. They have taken a page from employment agency's handbook. Over-recruit, lead people on, and then cull. The part I don't like is that I confirmed with her that there were no further issues to be resolved ( other than making it thru orientation )! It ain't right man. It just ain't right. I have made allot of changes in my life to prepare for this move. Things that HAD to be done in advance. I have chosen NOT to post this in 'report a bad trucking company'; as it is not hard core mistreatment. It just seems out of character with all the favorable things I've read on this site.
Anyway; enough crying. I do thank everyone that helped me out with information in this attempt to re-enter the industry. Upward and onward.
Dashed hopes

thats too bad man!....the company is a good place to start, but its far from perfect!...but thats the trucking industry for you...
I wish you all the best!Crusty Thanks this. -
I think you might have dodged a bullet. Isn't Shaw down there around Dalton?
-
yeah shaw has a boatload of locations around Dalton

Unless you know something I don't why not check them out. I use to run 75 four days a week and I'd see them running day cabs everywhere.

I could be wrong but I think MOST of their stuff is hauled by outside carriers like Millis. I live in Canton; about an hour from Dalton. There is so little work around there getting on with them would be tough. BUT; It's worth a try. Thanks.

Sorry to read that...I guess it's better than being at the end of orientagtion and hearing that...I wish you the best...
Crusty Thanks this. -
I know that area has seen bad times. I use to run to Monroe, LaGrange, Franklin and to Dalton twice a week. Seems like Canton is the best out of all those. GL.Crusty Thanks this. -
Thanks allot you guys. Guess I'll just try to find an OO with a few trucks and get 'recient' experience. I won't have med. insurance but It's about the only route I have left if I want to get back in the seat. Ill figure it out. Or not.

Sorry to hear that but hey, at least they were up front enough about it not to let you trek off to orientation and then feed you that line. I think right now is the pretty slow period for needing new drivers, but wait around a month or two if you can and watch and see if the story doesn't change. People come and go from training companies all the time. Lot's of guys will do a 6 month to a year tour with a starter company and take their resume elsewhere in search of a gig that works better for them. This usually ensures a steady stream of folks coming in the front door and leaving out the back, but I guess sometimes you hit a lull and run out of seats to fill. The other issue is that Watkins hasn't been super aggressive about expanding or updating their fleet lately the way I believe May or some of the others have been, so that also tamps down the need for new drivers.
Crusty Thanks this.
