If the headline is so stupid I'm not going to bother reading the article associated with it.

Are you reading dry technical papers or magazines about the same subject or just ignoring most things about anything not in your field of view at the moment? There are easy ways to stay informed even as a driver, but some drivers don't want to know and just have different excuses for not knowing.

An article claiming in its title that nearly 10x the population of the US had their SSNs stolen is a pretty stupid headline. I don't go for clickbait is all.

You aren't required to read anything. It doesn't mean it can't affect you or that if you wait until it affects you that you did the wise thing. THAT ONE STORY wasn't reported in only one place with only that same headline everywhere. Did you read any of them? If one person has two businesses he may have 3 different ID numbers, depending on how those businesses are organized. Did you see the part in the thread or the story where it says it's NOT JUST SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS? Because it's not just social security numbers involved and living and past people have SSNs since the 1930s. Criminals don't usually just use 1 SSN for one fraud. Depending on the type of fraud, they may use dozens or hundreds of SSNs, EITNs, ID numbers.

2.9 billion, but ssns only go to 999,999,999 (ie 1 billion minus 1)

Asserting 100 % of living us individuals have 4 ssns would get you to 1.3-1.4 bn, wheres the other half of that coming from???

Tbon3 makes a valid point, if an editor cant sanity check their headline, theyre definitionally clickbait and EVERYTHING they say is suspect

As far as "security" is concerned, yeah, there isnt anything new, data breaches are just going to escalate as time progresses, if you arent on top of it, youre living in the past, but that was true 10 years ago

Nobody is defending the sanity of headline writers or journalists. I'm explaining for maybe the 3rd or 4th time IT'S NOT JUST SSNs.
The ability to lock your SSN is new. I'd never heard of that before this story caused me to start looking around. I don't wait until the legendary skill of journalists meet my preference before looking into something. It's just as possible to learn from people making mistakes as not learning until you see a perfect example of good performance. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

I have 5 alerts on my file with phone numbers not associated to me of people using my ssn supposedly. I’m guessing it’s for work and they filling up my contributions to the gooberment.

2 months ago the SS office couldn’t verify who I was or my citizenship. that’s sorted out.

oh well not my problem. Let them pay my taxes.

but I watch my credit report like a hawk.

You must have me confused with somebody else. I didn't say anything about SSNs or population count.

Doesn’t matter how many ssn the guvment actually has on record as being issued. Numbers are being sold. The cartels have this down with the border jumpers. It is part of the coyote package. Another thing is everyone is assuming the guvment had actually counted everyone on the last censes. 2020 was the covid cluster. My household for one was never counted. We never filled anything out and nobody showed up at our gate to ask. I know of others that say the same thing. Remember folks the border was only officially closed for a short while during that time until corn pop took over and then boom.

Freeze your credit report. Not even YOU can get credit with a frozen report. Would you lock your door or hope a "Keep Out" sign would be enough?
