I just received the offer to work for Con-way Freight, and I am definitely going to take it but I am just curious what to expect before I get there. I know a lot of it is working on the dock with forklifts and such. And I'm sure it would also help others on their decision also if they knew what to expect.
From the looks of it this is going to be a great job for me to get into at 21 years old. I can't wait to begin this great opportunity!

I know La Salle just opened up a huge 235 door terminal there. Seems to be a good freight state...i think
What do you want to do? Linehaul or City/P&D work?
Expect to go on the flexboard and calling in at different times depending on what you do. At 21, if you can grin and bear it you'll eventually get a bid run..I hope and can make some decent money.
Expect to see a forklift quite a bit, you'll drive the junkers possibly without A/C but the pay is decent. You're in Central region so youll start at 19.60/hr or somewhere in that vicinity.
Anything else you want to know just as, a few of us freight boys roam around here, and good luckRadman Thanks this. -
I was 22 when I worked there last year.If you don't have many bills and can survive being on flex board then you should be ok. I couldn't survive it at all. Are you going full-time driver or through apprentice program. I went through the apprentice program and can fill you in

CenturyClass, I want to try both Linehaul and P&D. They said I would be starting out on Linehaul, most likely going to LaSalle since that's what the bottom of the seniority list usually does. I don't mind though, I feel this is going to be an awesome opportunity for someone my age. The equipment won't be worse than the beer delivery outfit I just got done working for, in fact at this terminal it all looks very well kept.
ACH, I'm not going through the apprentice program. All they mentioned was about 2 weeks of training. Although I got my CDL back in January and have a little under 2 months of driving a beer truck.
I won't be afraid to ask questions! -
you got lucky, they made me go through the class... like cenutry said you will be driving a toyota forklift more than grinding gears. Although at line-haul will will get a fairly decent truck with A/C but if you do p/d you will get a junker without it. I dont know if your yard will have a shop but my old yard didnt and we brought our trucks to a different yard if repairs were needed, so if thats your run to that yard you will pretty much drive all the trucks(new/old). it is a good job to have once you get senority.

Welcome to Con-way Freight. If you want to see the big picture of the company, get a year under your belt and compete in a TDC. If you go to nationals you will be able to spend some time with the president of the company and you will see that we have very good management at the top, sometimes I have seen some bad fruit at the lower levels. Come with a good attitude everyday, do your job, be safe and have fun. It's that easy. Remember if an FOS wants to get in your face, smile all the way to the bank because they are paing you to listen to them run there mouth. It's not what a person says that matters, it is what you hear. I hear 40 cents hit my bank every minute they want to talk to me.

Been looking into Con-Way. They have a terminal close. So when you first start out you are on a on-call type of schedule? Can you work the docks if you don't get a run or are you just SOL for the day?
-
I won't mind working the docks, might even make the day go by faster.
Colorato, from what I was told at my terminal, I believe I work the docks for part of the day and then if they need me to run a night linehaul I will also do that. But I could be wrong, I will find out when I start. There was a lot of information thrown at me in a short amount of time haha -
Really 21 years old and they hired you? I'm almost 30 w/ 8 yrs exp and they don't even call me back. I have one ticket but it was 4.5 years ago.
