I got my 1 year OTR experience and I'm dying to be home more. I've looked into LTL but the only thing is I'm not a night owl. I can't sleep in the daytime, which eliminates things like linehaul. Even pulling reefer OTR I stuck to driving during the day 95% of the time and only did night driving when absolutely necessary. Is there any day jobs that allow me to sleep in my own bed every night that don't involve climbing the seniority ladder for years? If it helps, my location is Milwaukee WI

Look for P&D work, pickup and delivery. Fedex Freight calls it City. Not just sitting there.

Why not P&D for an LTL company? Even with low seniority and a late start time, you aren't likely to work much past 8pm or so. If your goal is "banker's hours," LTL P&D work is one of the few ways to eventually get there.
Another possibility would be to look for a small local truckload company that also has daycabs. I worked for such a company after I got sick of OTR. We local guys would get stuff loaded for the road guys and deliver loads they brought in off the road so they could come to the yard, drop/hook, and keep rolling. We also did crosstown moves and shuttle work for local companies with local customers. The pay wasn't that great, but it was what I needed at the time lifestyle-wise. With few exceptions, we worked from 7am to 5pm most days.
I don't know how you'd seek out such a place, though. I found that company by accident when I drove by and noticed some daycabs and just walked in and asked if they were hiring any local drivers. Maybe snoop around the rough industrial parts of town for some smaller trucking companies.Dan.S, rabbiporkchop and road_runner Thank this. -
Not all daycab work is ltl or linehaul. I do truckload p and d, all daytime mon-fri., hourly. Dang... if my company would hire another day cab in wisconsin i think it would be perfect for you. I haul in and out of milwaukee almost every day. I will call my recruiter on monday and ask what the current hiring status is.
Some others that i know of off the top of my head that i think offer home daily in your area....
Ursa, Feucht, Polyack (or however you spell it), Direct Drive Express... i think those are all truckload.
One year experience should be enough to find something good. Just gotta be patient and do some checking around. The good jobs aren’t posted everywhere like the megas do. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t hiring if you know what i mean.Last edited: Jan 27, 2018

If you want something with a little bit of work involved you could always do food service like I do I show up at 4am and I'm usually off before 5 four days a week but the down side to it is you unload your trailer with a dolly but if you like physical work it's a good gig

You can use your CDL for other things. There are many non-trucking jobs that require a CDL.
I just started a job as a Heavy Equipment Preventive Maintenance Field Technician. It requires a class B. I have very little mechanical experience and a small amount of Hevay equipment experience but was somehow able to talk my way into this job.
The point being that it's hard to find people that can pass a drug test, have comensense and good work ethic.
I hated living in a truck and now I'm going to make decent money and be home every night. There's more to a CDL THEN just driving.Dan.S, rabbiporkchop, austinmike and 1 other person Thank this. -

i started as night driver, with my previous company, i eventually went to days, but then realized i like night driving alot more. for various reasons.
1more respect because less people want to do night driving, and your job is a tad more secure.
2less traffic.
3and if i am off during the day, that means i can sun tan while i sleep and so on. if i work during the day i can't get much sun, only on my arms.
4the minor inconvenience of being up at night goes away once you get used to it, you won't be tired at night any more, and the headlights that blind you, you'll find ways to mitigate that issue such as tape paper to your visor to block it, and adjusting your side mirrors so the lights are not as bad, ect ect ect ect.Last edited: Jan 28, 2018

If you want to be a daytime p/d driver, Dayton freight and old dominion are hiring aggressively in Milwaukee. Saia seems to only be hiring linehaul, and im not sure about Estes. Ursa logistics has relatively set schedules and they pay well (I've heard). Abf and UPS freight pay well but I'm not sure if their new hires get set schedules.
Bob Dobalina Thanks this.
