Hey guys. I’m looking at a FL 122 with a DD16 and 455k on the clock. I’ve never owned a Detroit, how are these things holding up and what kind of mileage are you seeing major work at?
All I’ve heard is they pull good and the DEF system sucks.
Also Select trucks said it qualified for a 2year warranty to cover engine and after treatment BS.

What year is it? Auto or stick shift? That all can make a difference?

    probably not.

    I have had 3 DD16 in a row - a 2014, 2018 and 2021.

I have had very few issues with any of them - emissions or engine.

I run heavy all the time (50% anyway) with empty weight near 80k.

I trade trucks every 3-4 years - so men are always under warranty and go on to the next owner with about 300k miles.

Fuel mileage does not factor into my equation- so I am ok at 3 mpg loaded or 4 mpg if I am not that heavy. Or maybe 5 mpg if I am empty.

I know of at least 2 others that do the same and have also had very few issues.

not sure this helps or applies but there it is.

Thanks very much for the reply. Definitely good information. I’m torn between a Freightshaker and Mack. I pull a 7axle setup daily avg about 120-130lbs mostly local work.
I’m used to a heavy spec 379 and obviously that would be my choice but I be ###### if I spend 200k if I can get the job done just as good for under a 100.
my biggest concern is the FA weight as right now I’m 13,4 on my FA empty without my drop down. However figured I’d move my pin back and transfer more weight to my drives.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I could order and buy any truck

I have ordered and bought 3 Western Stars with Detroits in a row. It is all about the spec and not about the logo as far as I am concerned. I have. No desire for a narrow cab or the $30-50k premium for a paccar product.

I know absolutely nothing about the Mack product.

I had a guy leased to me that ran Coronado with a DD16 with 18918b on 46k airliner with 46k rears and a 14600 steer axle. He was light enough that the steer axle weight was not a huge issue.

he regularly ran 130k and was able to do it with out a flip neck on the trailer.

I do not buy used trucks, so I can’t really help you there. Remember, all heavy haul miles are hard miles - my take is you won’t save a ton of money by going with such high mileage trucks. That is just my opinion- if you need to rebuild it is going to be spendy.

I ran a 2016 Cascadia Eaton Ultrashift MXP 18 spd, DD16 600/1850 from May 2016 to November 2021. Put 530,000 miles on it pulling 140,000 lbs.
4.5 mpg lifetime average. Engine itself was reliable.
    Warranty stuff:
Injector cups after 2 years, diesel showed up in coolant.
Oil leaks around oil pan, oil filter housing.
    Water pump at four years.
One-box issues after 4 years. They replaced it and installed new injectors in engine.
Auto shift Clutch went just three weeks before five year warranty ran out.
Non warranty: radiator cracked after fourth year.

    Phoenix Heavy Haul Thanks this.
