I have a 06 Freightshaker with the DD60 14L egr motor. I have been having performance issues for a few months now and it all led to the turbo going out yesterday. I have read great things about PDI and their products, so I thought what a good time to give them a try! I called there this morning to talk to them about what they can do for me. To my suprize, I was very disappointed in the phone conversation that last all but about 3-4 minutes. I introduced myself and told him where I was located. I gave him the year, make, model of the truck, and told him I had been having a few problems with performance and then the turbo gave out. He replied, we have a stage one kit with all parts for you for $7,870.00 and that should take care of you. It was like, it was either I spend the 7800 bucks or I dont have time to talk. He did not ask anything about the truck or what kind of issues I was having or what I wanted to get out of the truck. I have looked at their web site and realize their product are not cheap. I have read countless hours of threads on this forum about their products and have learned a great deal! My disappointment , comes from calling a company to more then likely purchase their product, and basically not be given the time of day. I would think if you wanted to sell me a 7800 dollar product, that I could at least have a 10 minutes of your time to answer my questions. So, is there any other companys that do anything with helping a guy make his EGR detroit run like it should??? Thanks to everyone who has provided a TON of great information on this site!!!!!!!

You could try calling freightliner explain the issue and then if the technician says it's definitely a turbo only issue then call and order the turbo you want. Or find a different after market turbo . good luck

I'm not going to defend the phone call but having been in the shoes of a salesman and having friends who run shops....I understand. I'm not saying he should have been short with you on the phone but I'd guess your probably one of 50 calls that day and 49 of them were people wanting free tech support or had no intention of buying.
Personally I wouldn't call PDI directly anyway because I've heard the sales staff are clueless when it comes to they're products. You need to get in contact with Mr.Haney and ask about PDI stuff. He's main interest is Cat performance but will sell you anything PDI sells and knows more them then 90% of the PDI direct sales staff. Get a Stage 1 ECM flash, new turbo and block off the EGR and you'll be good to go. (might even keep up with a stock Cat, sorry I had to)
However if you want performance it's not cheap, also don't call your dealer because as much as "Detroit" and "Performance" don't usually don't go together "Dealer" and "Performance" REALLY don't go together.Last edited: Dec 2, 2011
Trucker186 Thanks this. -
They were quoting you list price and probably every option under the sun. Get a quote from Mr. Haney. I asked him in the same line of thought I believe you are following - if the performance parts cost the same as OEM, why not? He gave some solid advice on my 04 FL DD14 that led me to an OEM fix that turned out to be a better value. When the occasion to shop performance comes along again, he'll be my first call.
I wasn't intending to hotrod the truck, just get it back to at least factory performance. I elected to give the dealer a crack at confirming just a failed turbo and it turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold that a stack of PDI parts wouldn't have fixed. The turbo later turned out to be on it's way out (VGT vanes sticking) anyway but the total repair bill came out a few thousand less than a PDI package and I still would have needed the exhaust manifold.
I am also fortunate to have a competent local FL dealer service tech that learned all the tricks to these motors when they were new and still under warranty. -
I believe the $7800+ quote you received includes: the PDI high performance box, free flowing air filter, high performance turbo, high performance fuel injectors, high performance exhaust manifold, and free flowing muffler. At least it did for me several months ago...
Get the EGR delete kit from EGR Tuner too. -
I have had the stage 1 tune for bout 2 yrs now i love it and you will out run a stock cat by the way no problem. Did you call ut or pa? i delt with jerry ray out of pa he an ok guy he is just to busy but i dont regret getting the tune im almost out of warranty so when its up ill delete the egr and turbo by the way full tilt is now mfg a hd exhaust manifold for this engine i have cracked a dozen of the stock ones just a little quicker after its turned up lol! i would do it in steps to see what you are after thats a chunk of change to shell out at once jmo!
RedForeman and Stuskw Thank this. -
Yamerhamer JerryRay is in the south west in pa near rt I 60 he does the tunes rite at his shop so if you passing by you can get it programed?

Yeah, I understand this! He did seem like maybe he really didnt have any useful info he could give me on the products. The last I read, Mr. Haney didnt work on Detroit ECM's. As far as your CAT comment......well all I can say is.... -
This is exactly what I'm trying to do. I am just looking for a SOLID stock performance. We all know that the factory stuff can be improved and that was what I was looking for. My turbo is more then shot, its blowing oil out of every seam. I have had issues with the boost/egr mode and has been to Detriot Diesel several times. I have brand new injectors. I have still yet to find a shop that does not just want to hang parts. What ever happen to diagnostic work?????
-
He said that was turbo, tune, and manifold. Looking at their site, I thought i could purchase the standard turbo(not big boss) and the tune for about 3k. Block off the manifold for the egr and go. He stated they block the egr inlet and leave everything else in place. I have read about the egr tuner, do you have any experience with this product? I was going to call that guy monday.
