seems like a no brainer to me.
sit at a truckstop for xmas.
drive home for free and let the company pay for the fuel.
rent a car. still drive home for free PLUS the rental and gas charges. and hope you don't get fired for abandoning the truck. then pay for a rental and gas BACK to the truck.

No brainer, I'd be rolling before the conversation was over. And I'm going to get flamed for this (remember I'm in Canada though) but if Christmas dinner and family was just a 9 hour drive away I'm goin' straight home regardless of what my coloring book looks like (unless your on qc). Grab a coffee, a couple redbulls, some beef jerky and go man go.
They're paying the fuel for you to get home, who cares if you're not getting paid. -
If you are "told"...by whom? If it is your DM and it is on the QuallComm, then it is "dispatched miles"...yes you will get paid for the miles, it is truck placement, Swift does it often to keep the trucks in place for future freight. In certain circumstances, Swift will deadhead hundreds of trucks...example;
small amount of freight projected for PNW (Sumner, Seattle, Portland) and an abundance of freight SLC and Bay area, they will move "X" number of trucks from PNW into the two zones needing trucks one or 2 days out. Also if freight is consistently poor, Swift has "circled the wagons"...move "X" number of trucks from each western terminal to a different western terminal, just to keep the drivers a bit less edgy by getting them moving.
Go home, you are getting pay for the miles.....MERRY CHRISTMAS DRIVER

Other, only getting paid if they put it into the QC has a trailer move, or reposition and they send Trip info. You are correct in moving trucks and trailers around as far as freight,
