Dealers won’t give PeterBuilt 359, 377, or 378 Series Buildsheets or parts numbers??

Hello, my name is Amber and I’ve been working at a trucking company for about a month now and I have been desperately trying to obtain a build sheet which would save me hours and hours of driving and hunting for replacement parts!!

We are redoing and fixing up the following PeterBuilts; ordering parts has been so difficult because even the auto parts store workers have been having a hard time getting the parts numbers from the peterbuilt salesmen! I guess the build sheet is located on micro fiche at the dealership so that’s why it’s so hard or something, hell I dunno but I’ve no problem paying for the sheet or pictures of it at least but have had no luck period!! Any ideas?!?!
    359 series from 1986
    377 series from 1987
    378 series from 1990

desperately been trying to find the build sheets with no luck, dealers won’t give em up either... any ideas?!?!

Microfiche is 1985 and previous. The parts list is pages and pages and pages of breakdowns and sub assemblys and not printer friendly. Also most numbers change up a couple times are are usually useless at an aftermarket place besides the powertrain (engine, trans, diff brakes).

Also look at it from the pete parts guys perspective, you want them to do all the work of looking up and finding the correct parts/ updated numbers just to walk around the corner to a competitor and give them the sale.

Any parts in particular you are looking for? Last 6 of vin will be needed.

I’m looking for all kinds of parts which is why I wanted to purchase the build sheet, like PeterBuilt just charges way to much for a small business to keep up with anymore :( but here’s the VIN: 1XP9D28X4GD196793

    Amber,

These trucks are old enough local parts houses should be able to get whatever it is you need for chassis, brake and suspension components without much trouble. Even drivetrain, trans and engine parts can be had with only the model number or serial number of the components in question. There should be no need for OEM numbers to cross.

Truck dealers in general usually have a good assortment of options for parts both new Original equipment stuff and aftermarket choices for high failure rate parts at a much cheaper price that may be an improved design even. Some cases even OEM is cheaper than some aftermarket items.

I think maybe your frustrations may lie with your local parts house having trouble looking up parts for you. I have worked both sides of the fence and understand what you mean. I would begin a log on each truck of components and part numbers for future reference. Sometimes crossing numbers online or matching up old part for part is the only option. Its not as simple as calling and saying you need a wheel seal for a 98' pete.

If you take the time to establish a repour with the dealer and purchase the parts that you cant get cheaper or aftermarket from them, they may be more likely to give you the information you need when you need it.

    No U in Peterbilt- ........Cheers

I can send you a copy of my build sheet if you want. It's for a '89 379 and a lot of the part numbers will be the same. Depends on what you're looking for though

Like mentioned above, the part numbers aren't as useful as they once were. Most of them have changed. What it's useful for is seeing what originally came on the truck

I rarely go to the dealer for parts. Most things on the truck were made by other companies and I can either find parts with them or aftermarket companies. I'm going through the front axle and rebuilding the wedge brakes right now. It's a Rockwell axle. RV forums have been a better source for manuals and parts schematics than trucking forums. Hardly anyone still use wedge brakes so I've had to buy NOS parts and kits off ebay, cross reference part numbers through all the different permutations of the manufacturer as well as other manufacturers (Rockwell, Axletech, Meritor, Euclid, BWP). I've found a lot of info on military forums since they still use wedge brakes

Keep a log like Goodysnap recommends. I have a huge binder as well as a thumb drive with everything I've found over the years

That's the thing with trucks, especially older trucks. They're not like cars where you had 2 engine and 2 transmission options with everything else being the same. You could have had two 359s roll out the factory door back to back and the only thing in common between the two would be hood/cab.

Most dealers don't give you part numbers because they know you will get cheaper somewhere else. If you get to know someone in the parts department they will help you out, on the down low so they don't get in trouble

Like bad-luck said, dealers are not going to waste their time looking up all the information for you just so you can turn around and buy your parts somewhere else. As far as I know, build lists do not work that way for trucks as in you get a list of part numbers it was built with. You can get build list of components, but each individual part number has to be looked up. They just don't time for that especially when most of the time customers buy the parts elsewhere.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice and input! Amber.GDPtrucks@gmail.com yes please send me any thing you Have that you think might help!! It would’ve been amazing if I’d have been here when the man I been helloing first started doing this but I have only been here since June 6th, but it kills me watching him constantly having to go hunt down parts! Hopefully one day it’ll be a snap because it’s not only inefficient, inconvenient, a waste of gas, wastes tons of money in shipping back and forth until the correct part is sent, it’s a big hassle all the way around and I’d like to think that surely someone else has it figured out a better way! I really do appreciate the info, hope that my boss does too!

Call the factory. They sent me a build sheet on my 359. Forget the dealers helping you with something like that.
