So what kind of freight is it that you want to haul? Flatbed, dry van, reefer, or tanker???

That has a lot to do with which company to look at.

I like the flexibility of reefers, so I'm leaning that way. But I'm wide open with the exception of flatbeds.

I have my tanker and doubles/triples endorsements and should have my Hazmat by the time I graduate from school. I've passed the test and started the background check.

Keep in mind that I'm not trying to get anyone to tell me where I should want to drive. I realize that is a very individual decision.

My #1 personal concern is where I'll get the best quality training.

My #2 personal concern is that I want to go somewhere for my first job that will help, not hurt, me in getting my next job if I decide to leave at some point.

But those are personal criteria, what I'm really looking for here is a good general list of decent options for new drivers.

With reefer your going to have to look at the fact that your going to stay out for atleast 4 weeks at a time usually. With flats there are a couple companies that can get you home almost every week if not every other week.

Flatbed is good but it is hard work with the winter and summer, trying to roll tarps in 5 degree weather with snow and ice on everything is not fun but I do it because I enjoy the challenges that flatbedding gives. I work for TMC and I enjoy it very much and they also teach you how to do everything the right way. I know Maverick is also another good flatbed company to start with who teach everything the right way from what I have read. For reefer I dont really know of whats good and whats not, I use to work for Prime back in 05-06 and it is much different now since then. I had a 71 MPH company truck with paper logs and ran LOTS AND LOTS OF MILES but I also was never home.

    The Gryphon Thanks this.

I don't have a problem with being out 4 weeks at a time. I'm single with no kids, so I'll stay out as long as necessary to get the job done, especially in my first year.

I personally enjoy the flatbed side of the industry. TMC and maverick are both very good flatbed starter companies to go with who teach everything the right way. Those were the 2 that I had to choose from after I went through and researched and talked to about everything. I just like the being home often deal. I know Melton has a lot of people that enjoy working there yet they are not home as often from what I have seen. They pay great and they have nice trucks also.

LOL That does make a difference. Somebody should chime in with some good info and suggestions on which companys are good for pulling a reefer. I know there are some on here who really enjoy Prime.

A great trainer really does make a difference. A great trainer will have you adequately prepared for the most part to be successful on your own.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Watkins Shepard, but I don't think that I'd want to go out by myself without a trainer for my first job.

Covenant was my first company, and it wasn't bad. I'm pretty sure they still hire students.
