I was on the fence between Watkins and May. May starts out at .30 cpm and they tailor your training period based on need...3-5 weeks was what the recruiter said was common. They pay some flat rate per week during the training period but I can't recall what it was. They also run nicer than average equipment and still buy new trucks I've heard. They have a reefer terminal in either MS or LA if I recall, so they might a good fit for you. They also do dry van out in the western 11. I see them regularly out on that side of the country.

    The Gryphon Thanks this.

this was the main reason I was kinda hesitant to even fill out an application with them, but I spoke to a recruiter at a job fair and he said if I really wanted a trainer they would get me one. so I know they normally DON'T have trainers for new people, but if what he is telling me is correct it is possible to get one if you really wanted.

My recruiter didn't tell me that when I spoke with her. Of course, she was promoting it as a benefit that they get you "out making money" sooner.

But, I'm still quite reluctant to just hit the road without having the benefit of someone showing me the ropes, at least for a couple of weeks.

Just FYI, she said that they do use Qualcomm for dispatching, but they're still on paper logs.

I'm 56 and would not do anything but flatbed. Your only as old as you let yourself believe you are.

Oilfield jobs pay way better than beginning otr. I honestly can't believe what guys accept as pay otr, 30-40k vs 60-80k. The work isn't that hard and the equipment is probably older but it seems like a much better way to start out to me.

I went with Builders transportation out of school. I like them. Starting pay is .35cpm plus tarp pay and quarterly bonus. I average 22-2500 miles per week and have not missed a weekend at home yet. Equipment is hit or miss ive got an 06 columbia but i like it. Other new guys got '11 and '12 macks. Just depends on what they have open when you leave the trainers truck. If you are interested in flatbedding look them up.
