Have cdl and little exp. otr left a bad taste in my mouth but still have a taste for it..CRAZY HUH?? HOpe to get some exp. yet I know the big ones Swift>Werener get a lot of flack on this forum but can any one tell me how a guy can get to where he wants to get w/out using one of these companies?? And I said USE as a stepping stone .. What company would hire a greenie when ther are million milers looking for a seat. A veteran most likely would not go to either of the two above RIGHT? So that leaves a seat open for a guy like me. So what is all the FUSS? a man must do what a man must do!! Any body got a better suggestion?? Im open to all suggestions form those who know the Industry.. THANKS

How much experience do you have? It's a bad time to start driving the way the economy is.Someone that is limited to what company they can work for is going to have a harder time.

Where is it that you want to get to?

I drove ten years for Werner.I'm driving out of the country right now and don't plan on coming back until the economy is better.By then I'll have my own truck and become an O/O.If I didn't and Werner could give me 3,000+ miles a week I'd go back to them.Every company can't be everything to every driver. You have every view and opinion under the sun on this board. There are drivers here that think a company sucks just because they got turned down. That's like a guy that calls a girl a slut just because she won't go out with him.Read the Good Company/Bad Company posts.Do a lot of research.Even if you just use the company as a stepping stone.Use them to build experience. If you like them after all then you can stay with them or go the green pastures. The first year in the trucking industry is going to suck for a newbie anyway. There's a reason why 90% of new drivers won't be driving a truck after the first year and leave the industry.

Try getting on as a switcher somewhere. Large grocery warehouse or something like that. Our switchers start at $16-$17hr. and after they have a year acc. free they can go on the road. We have quite a few drivers that did that and after 2 years are making over $60k and are home every night.
If you don't mind "real" work try US Foodservice or Sysco if they are near you.

Nothing wrong starting with Swift or Werner. However, remember that they are using YOU as well. They will try to get you to drive illegal. Refusing to do so will not get you fired in most cases. You can also expect them to treat you poorly and to lie.
I started with Swift and that was my experience. If you choose that route, go in with your eyes wide open and prepared for crap and lots of it.

I would get out and visit every trucking company I could. I'd stay away from recruiters and on-line companies at first until I exhausted all the companies I could go to. There's alot of companies that do not advertise on the net for jobs. You may walk into a company that needs to fill a position right then and it may be the best company to work for. I would do that before I would go to the recruiters or bottom feeders.

I can say a few bad things about swift, but they never tried to make me run illegal.

For the most part, I agree with you. 1 planner tried it, and didn't care too much for the terminal manager coming to talk to him after I refused and he threatened me. I suffered crap loads for 3 days until the TM spoke to him again.... suddenly he became very nice....

bEEN OUT OF THE SCENE FOR A WHILE, WITH LITTLE EXP. STILL HAVE CDL AND A SENSE OF WANT TO, BUT NOW I'M THINKING IT IS NOT AT ALL LIKE IT WAS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. i WAS AT ONE TIME GETTING FLYERS IN THE MAIL RECRUITERS CALL ME, NOW NOT ONE KNOCK ON MY DOOR..GUESS I'M NOT A COMMODITY ANY MORE BECAUSE OF THE MILLION MILERS NEEDING JOBS. PLUS I HAVE BEEN OUT OF SCHOOL FOR 3 YEARS.. DOES ANY ONE BELIEVE THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY WILL EVER RECOVER OR IS IT I JUST DONT HAVE ANY THING TO OFFER, BECAUSE OF MY INEXPIERIENCE. HAS THE INDUSTRY SLOWED DOWN THAT MUCH TO HEAR RUMORS OF BIG COMPANIES CLOSING AND SOME ARE ACUTALLY CLOSING DUE TO ECONOMIC TIMES.. GUESS IM SHOOT'N A PIPE DREAM. oH WELL I CAN GO TO MY LOCAL TRUCK STOP AND WATCH ALL THE HAPPY CAREFREE DRIVERS RUN FROM THEIR TRUCKS TO THE FUEL DESK, GRAB A SACK LUNCH WHILE OTHERS ARE #####'N BECAUSE THEY ARE HOLDING UP THE FUEL LANE.. AND GRAB A DEEP BREATH OF DIESEL FUMES AND GO HOME AND SLEEP IN MY OWN BED.!!! KEEP THE WIND IN YOUR FACE!!!!

Sorry it didn't work out for you. But you'll probably be better off sleeping at home etc. as you say.
