List the 3 year gap as motorcycle accident. Period. Never mention the unemployment and blame it on your employer. Tell them it took time to get back to 100% which you now are and can pass any DOT physical. Give them proof of the accident. Newspaper clips and that sort of thing. Your doctor can give them a letter. All they need it proof of where you were.
