Hi everyone. I am looking at a possible job prospect that would have me running a dedicated route(daytime). A large part of the run would have me going from Chicago(I-88)to Davenport and getting on I-80 to continue west to almost Des Moines. I have never traveled on either section of interstate and was wondering how it was to travel. I am looking for info such as:
Traffic
Terrain
Speed Limits(truck)
Road Condition
Weather Conditions in winter
Any other highlights or lowlights
Thanks
Dedicated Route on I-88 & I-80... What's it like?

Well during winter there is lots of snow, and ice. Speed limit in Illinois is 65 I believe, Iowa not sure but probably 70-75.
The terrain is mixed...flat, hills, etc.
Traffic isn't too bad except for the Chicago area can get rough.harlycharly55 Thanks this. -
Traffic - Depending on where in Chicago you are coming from, if you are running I290 out of the city proper expect a #### ton of traffic outbound in the afternoon. If you're not running out of "Chicago" and instead are running out of the western suburbs off of I88 traffic isn't too bad, just in and around Naperville and Aurora can be hit or miss during rush hour time. Other than that expect little to no traffic on I88 and a decent amount of truck traffic on I80 through Iowa, although it move at or above the speed limit
Terrain - LOL, flat, boring, monotonous
Speed Limits(truck) - I88 in Illinois is 55 for trucks but I've seen very few vehicles ever drive that slow in Illinois. Once you hit the DeKalb area it jumps to 70 for all traffic, but there is a 65mph section for trucks around DeKalb before it jumps to 70. Iowa is 65 around the Quad cities area and then it jumps to 70 until Iowa City, drops back to 65 then back up to 70 to Des Moines
Road Condition - Not any real construction currently to be worried about.
Weather Conditions in winter - Wide open plains so if it's snowing and windy expect blowing and drifting snow. However, on I-88 in Illinois that is a tollway and the tollway system is always the first stretch of road to get treated and cleared. I-80 in Iowa can get very interesting in snow storms. There tend to be an unbelievable and ridiculous amount of jackknifed and rolled over semi's on I80 in Iowa whenever there is a snow storm. I chalk that up simply to driver stupidity really and less because of road conditions.
Any other highlights or lowlights - Easy driving unless snowing, maybe boring and monotonous overall. Can pretty much always make good time unless you have to fight Chicago traffic, depending on where you are running out of. The further into the city the worse off.SodaDriver and ramblingman Thank this. -
Thank you for your great response. It is very thorough and helpful. I would be leaving Chicago I-290/I-294 area around 12-1 p.m. time to head west to 88 then 80.

Its Boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This time of the year that can be a good thing.

Run it a lot. There's a lot worse places to be. Over all a pretty good run if you ask me.

Ran Seattle to Chi. What they say about anything east of Sydney NE. I did see a tree once but someone cut it down. The only thing between there and Canada was a barb wire fence and it blew down. Combines and cows blow away up there. I'd much rather run that stretch in the night.
My apathy is at an all time whatever.
