Change it and gone, so much less expensive. Besides, why worry about the write off? You only get to effectively write off your tax rate, not 100% of the service call -it is not a dollar for dollar deduction from your income tax. Even if it was my time is much more valuable than a few hundred dollar tax savings.

Depending which engine, we'll use my ISX, the two big tensioners are $320 each, with a discount me picking them up at Freightliner. The two smaller ones are about $200 each.

The serpentine belt is like $38.

So like $1200 for wrench to do the whole kit and caboodle in about an hour.

If the big tensioner grenades on the road, it's gonna take the belt along with it, probably in the neighborhood of $1200 to $1400 to fix that one and the belt.

I keep the old belt in my truck. Inside is cracking, but it's for emergencies.

As has been mentioned, this is a pretrip kind of thing.

When your tensioners are squeaking, squeaking, squeaking, guess what?

Take a trip and look in the mirror after you read this.

Anytime you can lower operating cost the more money in your pocket . Yea your paying a tax on that money but it a % of what you made. Downtime cost you revenue thats not a write off instead its no food on the table .My operating cost are 1.32mi i lowered it this yr to 1.09 by doing my own work belts, pm, some bolt on items. My pms cost 120.00 for oil change . I see a dry parking lot i get the grease gun out. I have a Glider truck so things are easy to wrench on to that helps

If I have the belt I will put it on. IWX is the only company I have driven for that gave us a spare belt and the tools in a emergency box under the sleeper. Had to replace a broken belt on a Columbia/CAT in Newberry Springs CA in the summer of 2003 was glad to have it.

    Thank you every one.
I just wanted to clarify two things. Before my name starts getting beat up as no pretrip poster. Wanting to know why I'm always broke down.
    1) I pop the hood as close to every three to four days as possible. Some but not very many exceptions
. I check lights. Belts. Oil. Rad fluid. Power steering fluid. Tires. (Both pressure and wear and tear) plates. Look for new damage. Check to make sure. The alternator wires are good. And the positive jumper thermal is covered. I'm the land star driver that's under the hood with a flash light more often than, the land star guys who own thier trucks.
And leaks. Finding the leak. Is what got me in this mess. My biggest problem. Is sometimes. I can look at something and not be able to see its not right. The big stuff I check every three weeks when I take the truck home. Brakes. Hoses. Cracks in frame. Loose bolts.
I've been practicing for when / if I get my own truck.

2). 12 hours before. I had a water pump changed out on the truck. The belt was good. They idle burped it. I slept all night. In the morning. Prior to taking off. I popped the hood and double check thier work.
During none flash light hours. It was new belt and tensior. As of Fed 16 19.

I come here for the knowelage. And wouldn't want to disrespect any one. By not atleast. Trying before crying. But I really got a lot to learn. And that's why I'm always saying thank you.

Crying is not going to help. When you changed the belt should’ve changed the tensioner. Signs of bad tensioner (include but not limited to) that I know is odd noise (sometimes very hard to tell) or belt slipping to the side (sometimes barely visible).

    Thanks
