    So what exactly is Def I thought it was something to do with epa to not hurt the environment with the old diesels black smoke but I guessed wrong?

    And Canada driving passport needed or because technically you aren't a tourist do you just get something from the company saying you can drive there? Even with a passenger

    DEF = Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

    Not sure how it works/supposed to work exactly.
    Supposed to clean up the emissions somehow :D

    Extra tank on the Truck between 5-15 gallons. Think 'my' Cascadia (Company Truck) has a 13 gal tank.
    I usually put 5-7 gallons every other fillup.

    DEF breaks down compounds in the exhaust. You used to just roll up to the border with your CDL and paperwork for the load... now you need a passport, as does any passenger.

    DEF has been explained already, but if you have a truck that uses it you better know where to get it. I have a 23.5gal DEF tank and still struggle to make it to Alaska. I carry extra jugs in the cab with me. Yes, it has to be in the cab since it will freeze. Between WA and AK I know of only one cardlock fuel station that sells DEF in Canada at the pump. DEF is like Gold up North and I have paid over $7.00 for a gallon. Walmart and auto parts stores become your friend. I just dumped 9 1/2 2,5gal jugs in my DEF tank and added to more cases in the cab as back up.

    You can get an enhanced drivers license or use a passport to get across the border. Make sure you have no skeletons in your closet since they will do a back ground check on your first crossing and lots of people will be denied entry. Besides your BOLs you will have either an in transit manifest if you will just travel through Canada or P.A.B.S and P.A.R.S and ace manifest when loading or delivering in Canada to the US.

    In the US most Truckstops have DEF at the Pump by now.
    At least the big chains.

    That is one of the things I miss most running up North are the truck stops with high speed pumps. In Canada it is one tank at the time, no DEF pumps and showers are not easy to find either. Most places I fuel at are unmanned card locks. The high light of fueling is when your card swipes within the first 10 tries and I get a receipt after fueling.

    Getting into the great country of Canada isn't a problem, it is getting back home that you need a passport, enhance license or FAST card (best one) so they can Identify You.

    DEF is a system that is used in your exhaust system.
    A hexagonal shaped, stacked filter unit which is coated in various precious metals and catalysts at the end of your exhaust, captures diesel particulates that are harmful to living organisms.

    When these particulates are caught in the filter, DEF fluid which acts as a reagent (urea, and water) is sprayed into the exhaust flow which then reaches the filter.

    Combined with the heat and reagents (DEF), the filter acts as a catalyzer- essentially breaking down carbon, hydrogen and sulfur bonds which hold together partially burnt, or completely unburnt hydrocarbon chains (IE: Diesel fuel, various sulfurous compounds, CO, ect ect) into less harmful substances.

    In short, DPS/DEF systems do help cut down on emissions.
