I've been researching for a new laptop and found that the new Dell XPS laptop series offers BUILT-IN Sprint or Verizon broadband cards.

Does anyone have one of these units? I'd like to know how they work...if they are as good as the plug-in card units.

    thanks

The problem with a built in card is you can not swap it to other machines. So if your computer stops working you still have to pay a service plan to the cell carrier and you cant move the external card to another laptop. Also if there is ever an issue with the internal card (i.e. it dies) you cant just send the card in for repair or buy a new one to replace it (unless you buy an external). If this does not sound like it would be a problem for you then go ahead and buy the built in internal device, otherwise I'd suggest an external.

Just FYI did you know you can buy some these external cards on amazon.com for a penny (but you have an activation fee and a monthly service charge from your cell carrier). I've been looking at the verizon external express card and its a much better deal than I can get from verizon. Verizon wants to charge me for the modem ($50-$100) plus the same activation fee, and the same 2 year monthly service fee. Anyway just thought I'd mention it.

    Cheers,

I have a Dell Latitude D830 with a built in AT&T card and love it. The antenna is built into the frame of the screen. Much better reception and speed than with the external card I had on my previous computer.

Actually, you CAN replace the internal cards. You may have to order it off the 'net, but it's usually nothing more than a mini-PCI card (or whatever the new PCI-E standard for laptops is). Take off a cover on the bottom, take it out, snap the new one in, reattach antennas. Call Sprint/Verizon, do an ESN swap. That easy.

Yep, all DELL computers are built so that repair is straight-forward and simple. Even a putz like me can repair one. :biggrin_25525:

I don't know about Verizon, but there is no cap on the Sprint network. I have downloaded over 5 gigs in a day on my Sprint card no problem.

Thanks. Some days I wonder if I'm a slow learner or got a sweet tooth for punishment.
