He is looking for a career path and advice from people that have been

down that path. Not from someone who has done it for a yr and loves it.

Don't waste your gi bill on a cdl school. Does anyone know if being in the

military gives drivers better chances of getting those well paying government

contracts I always hear about? How do ppl get those things..just curious

A512 look into jobs with the post office for driving over here. they have the best trucks with excellant maintnance. Have never had one break down. knock on wood. My mission over here is convoy security from Kuwait up into Iraq.
I appriciate everyones input. I have been considering many things this is just one career I was looking at. Guess I will just have to wait untill I get back state side to see how things are going.
Again I want to thank everyone and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Yes, even as a civilian contractor you get preference points for military. You can go to the goverment sites and see what the jobs pay and where they are located.

A512, are you asking about the contracts in the states where civilian drivers move equipment from one base to another? or the one over seas like in Iraq and Afghanistan? the ones over seas are with other companies the military contracts out to like DynoCorp and Acorn.. military use to contract to KBR Kellogs Brown and Root.. but i think DynoCorp has that contract now.. if you're talkin about the state side contracts.. those are called GSA contracts.. i tried to ReUp for 88M and the ability to get GSA contracts instead of doing garrison duties.. they wouldn't go for it.

What good money to you may not be good money to others. Liked I said before I believe the best place for this OP is to stay military. If he doesn't like his job he can always change. I did it and I was in a very critical billet. And all through the years they say no one can change but I put my paperwork in and went into the Seabees which is the hardest Navy field anyone can transfer into. Then after 20 (i'd go 30) years he can get out and find a job he wants and take his time doing it. Maybe trucking would be worth looking at then.

The mail runs are not done by the actual postal service workers..Most mail is handled through KBR..They have subcontracts with other companies to haul it as well...And mitchmazz, kbr still has the a huge logitics contract there, plus their sub contrcat companies...Dyncorps big roles are mechanical postitions as far as Iraq goes..Maybe BigDuker can clarify some of these things as well...

FYI about major companies. Arrow trucking a 1400-1500 truck fleet just closed the doors on 11/23 and STRANDED most of the drivers where ever they were! This is one of the MAJOR companies that Daddy left to the kids and the kids ran it into the ground!

If you still want to come into this field research the companies as best as you can before taking the plunge but if the company has more than 5 trucks and is run buy the children STAY AWAY! A trend is forming with these companies taken over by the kids and the trend is called "going out of business!"

Thanks for your service and Merry Christmas where ever you are!
