Thanks jdsouza for the info. I plan on using my GI Bill to fall back on if trucking doesn't work out. I do have some state benefits that i am willing to use to pay for driving school. if i end up needing to do that. plus i will have a bit of money saved up from this deployment and no bills. Thanks again.

Before I would go to werner with my gi bill, you should see if your state has WIA..It stands for Workforce Investment Act..We have it here in Ohio and they pay 5k for schooling for in demand jobs, and out of place workers. That covered my truckdriving school costs..Thats what I did when I came home from drivin in Iraq..Oh,and another thing about that werner deal..They traine people for free..When you do the gi bill, they take like 50% of it,and they continue to do that for like 9 months..Again,they train people for free..jdsouza,are you a recruiter for werner??

Well if you took the time to get that stuff, and the navy paid for it,I would atleast try to put a degree to work..Driving really isnt all its cracked up to be..The "smokey and the bandit" days are over..This is probably the worst time to get into it..I dont see it getting any better in the next 18 months..With driving comes logs,1 million rules and regs, low bridges, one way roads, idiot drivers, and a TON a bad companies..Driving in Iraq is the way to go...I would explore other options before getting your heart set on this cause you wanna see the country ,or just get money from your GI bill...

    jdsouza Thanks this.

Soldier, are you planning on joining the Guard when you get back? You might want to see if your state has a Trans or Heavy Engineer unit nearby that you can join - at the very least you could go to Leonard Wood and get some experience handling heavy equipment and big trucks on the government dime. Only down side is that you'd still have to learn how to handle a manual - all US military vehicles are pretty much automatic, nowadays. I'm currently in Baghdad, and my secondary is 88M, plus I've driven a tractor trailer for 14 years on the outside. Good luck!

I am actually in the Wyoming Nat. Guard. The state benefits will pay for Sage driving school. I can't change MOS yet your i will lose my bonus(i think maybe not i need to look into that some more) but i am not going to reenlist. i don't want to be deployed all the time. If you are in the Guard or reserves how does OTR work with drill? Do you make it to drill on time? Is it a problem with employers/loads? I still have a 1 and a half left in the guard after i get back to the states. Thanks

I never had a problem - just gave dispatch a copy of my drill schedule, and if there was a problem on the road I'd call my unit and set up an arrangement, usually a split train later when I had the time. Key is communication to your employer and chain of command.
