Correct...I'm sure I will get some solid answers this week. Im not in any big hurry so want to do this right.
Some states actually will force you to remove the 5th wheel to re-title it as an RV.
I know WI doesn't right now...

I know I’m not in Wisconsin, however. Man down here took one of his two year old Freightliner tractors, stretched the frame and had a King of the Road body set on it, and matching trailer to haul two dirt track cars and shop. Removed his company name from truck doors, changed no registration and carried on. Was even stopped on the Natchez Trace Parkway once,( which forbids commercial vehicles of any sort), and allowed to proceed as it was deemed a recreational vehicle. Was explained that if it had his name or company name on it anyplace, that would constitute advertising, thus commercial and prohibited.

Contact the Wisconsin Vehicle Research Unit, they’ll tell you everything you need to know.

Just change the title & registration to a RV. Will have to be inspected by the WSP to meet RV specs for the model year.
No 5th wheel, can have a ball hitch, don't remember what else it must have.
I'll try and find the number of a guy that worked for me that did it.

    Concorde and Hanadarko Thank this.

Thanks wichris - I dont see any restriction on the 5th wheel being included or not included - but I'm not disputing what your claiming either..
I just haven't found anything that spelled this out in WiDMV docs anywhere YET...
Let me know via PM maybe if you have any contact here in WI of that guy :)

No different than what the DMV calls a "homemade" bike/car. Call Madison WSP and they can tell you what you need to have on it for a "homemade) RV.
They'll have to inspect and sign off before the DMV will do it.

    Hanadarko Thanks this.

Are you going to be hauling any type of trailer like a 5th wheel camper?

I found specific requirements and contact for Wisconsin. I’ll try re-finding it and post a screenshot..

You called it a RV but in actuality would become a motor home, titled and plated as such. (RV’s are typically towed units)

The MV-1 and another form that needs to be filled out. There’s a list of items it will need and you must have 4 out of the 6? requirements.

Since what you’re doing isn’t really that common, your every day dmv worker isn’t programmed with the information.

wisDOT Vehicle Research Unit is who you need to contact.. I saw their number and will try finding it again.

Information is from actual Wisconsin residents who successfully went through the process

Indeed I guess a MH vs RV.
No trailer of any kind. Maybe down the road with a 5th wheel travel trailer but nothing in the works.

Yea that information from Carl is what I posted yesterday I saw on Facebook. But I don t know who this Carl is or how to reach out to him and so far nothing else I have found is that direct. But his post is a great starting place-
Thats why I posted in here hoping someone has direct knowledge. I am getting some helpful advice and options for sure tho..

I actually have received more replies than I actually thought I might..

    Thanks,

    NightWind and Concorde Thank this.
