Hi, i have 05 columbia with detroit 14l engine. This morning on the way to pick up a load turbo started acting up. There was some kind of hissing noise, turbo would start to spool, and I'm assuming turbo actuator would start doing its thing and power would come and go, now every time this happens huge cloud of smoke would come out of exhaust pipe. Called my comp. to cancel a load and on the way back, about 15m into it everything was fine. I just checked turbo shaft play and there is none in/out, side to side is minimal, there is no oil leaking out of it, its dry. Turbo actuator was replaced about a year ago. Now what i have noticed time to time even when its idling actuator shaft would just go up and down and turbo would make this noise just like this morning, any help is appriceted, TY

Sounds like the vanes in the back of the turbo could be hanging up. If it doesn’t move, or doesn’t move far enough the engine could be running without enough air for the load and fuel on it. That would explain the smoke.

Actuator is controlled by V Pod - Pods. Need that checked with a scan tool. Common fail item.

    Oxbow and ColumbiaBoB Thank this.
