Im trying to understand, what is the problem with pulling the head? Do people not want to pull it because its a lot of work or because its real tedious work?
Ive got a 07 columbia w/580k on it and I still have warranty on it.(Select truck warranty) I was loosing coolant and could not tell from where but I knew it was burning in the exhaust. When I shut it off, upon start up it was smoke white real bad, but never really smoked while driving(white) .It ran hot while sitting idled but not while driving ..
I dropped it off @ freight liner friday and they called me yesterday wanting my permission to pull the head. So I don't know much but I'm assuming they checked everything they could w/out having to take the cylinder head off Its almost like pulling the head is forbidden or something whats the deal??

Freightliner owns Detroit and if engine warranty don't matter who does it as long as the are Detroit certified but for me I think Detroit is higher priced then freightliner but I am sure they are all overpriced

Hey nick. Head removal on your motor isn't all that difficult. However it is time consuming. They will ask permission just because of the cost. The one piece head is heavy so you need a lift if some sort. There are 32 head bolts so that takes time. They will check surfaced and rework if necessary if possible at all. A job like that could easily run upwards of $6k. Be glad you have warranty!! There are a couple ways to check the head and gasket. Head removal, they drain the coolant. The other way is to drain the oil, remove oil pan and pressurize radiator looking for leaks past the cylinder liners. This is done if you are finding water in oil. Another culprit on the 14l is the egr cooler. That would be my first guess. They can remove and pressure test it.
