im thinking about buying a Detroit 60 series to put in a rat rod but I was curious as to what all is needed to be able run it. Will I need like the cluster and throttle pedal and PCM or will I just be able to run it off the ECM? I plan on using the manual trans that's already mated to it so I wont have have trans controlled BS.

The throttle provides binary data known as drive by wire data going to the engine's computer. Which then takes into account everything before applying your request for more fuel.
I don't know what it will take to run a S60 by itself outside of a 18 wheeler. But somewhere down the road to your rat rod should be a path to happiness you seek with that good engine. -
Yeah I figured I would need the throttle pedal and the ECM and harness to run the injectors and stuff but I wasn't sure if it would run without an instrument cluster and the PCM and TCM if it has one. I want to make it "bare bones" as possible so its less wiring and stuff I have to deal with. I am probably gonna be better off just buying like a wrecked semi and start disconnecting stuff and seeing if it runs as I disconnect stuff lol. Unless someone on here has already done the hard work of finding that info out.
And yes I want to make something unique. Something that nobody else has done already! Plus I want it for the crazy amount of power that they make lol! Thank you x1Heavy
Do you or anyone on here happen to know what the max amount of boost/ horsepower those engines can run? I'm thinking of doing a crazy turbo setup on it as well but I don't want to buy a bunch of turbos and spend a crazy amount of time building the setup to find out that they can only handle a certain amount of boost pressure haha! -
I'm thinking that as long as you have your powers and grounds on the OEM side of the ECM plus ignition power and throttle pedal you should be able to get it running in theory.
Ezrider_48501 and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
Okay cool thanks! Do you know of any other sensors that will need to be plugged in like the map sensor or anything like that for it to work? or does it not have sensors like that? sorry im just thinking small stuff like the 5.9L cummins in my truck needs IAT, MAP, TPS, Crank, Cam and injection pump sensors for it to run.

Engine ecm and all wiring is already on block and leave it alone. There is ig memory serves correct 2 plugs to ecm that one Is battery power and the other will be throttle, cruise, jakes, and fan controls. To use cruise or jakes you would need a clutch switch or brake switch. At min you will have throttle.

Don't focus on horsepower, your typical rat rod is probably around 500 ft-lbs of torque, you will be in the 1800 pound range with a 500 s60, MORE than enough to get you down the road smartly, since I have been involved in some of these type of builds I will add this,
Horsepower and torgue are by FAR the least of your worries, keep in mind how long this assembly is and what kind of wb you are going to need, also IF I was you, I would forget the manual trans, in a lite weight car/truck you will not be able to shift it fast enough to be worried about 500hp s60, on top of that, HALF of your gears in that tranny will be useless.
Now if you just want the 10 speed stick to prove that you can shift a manual truck tranny, go for it, but if you are worried about performance, look for an RV motorhome engine trans, that way you will get an Allison 6 speed, and you will go MUCH faster, MUCH quicker, just depends what you want.
AFTER you decide that, think about how you are going to get this to hook up on the street, traction WILL be a MAJOR issue, one last point, what are you using for a front suspension? Leafs will ride like ####! Also think about where you cab will mount in relation to engine height, s60 are pretty #### tall, in other words, are you going to be able to SEE around the motor???
I know the semi/rat rod builds that are out there are pretty cool looking, keep something in mind, most of them are show queens, back them off the trailer, go around the block, do a burnout and load it back up, VERY FEW of them are REALLY "drivers"!!! -
I believe you will also need speed sensor on rear of transmission for jake and cruise to work as well
